The Rays have all of the momentum in the world following Sunday’s 7-4 win over the New York Yankees, improving their 8-2 in the last 10 games. Meanwhile, the Marlins hope for more success after a 2-1 win over the Washington Nationals snapped a three-game losing streak.

Rays vs Marlins Preview
It’s a big surprise to see the Rays as the slim underdogs tonight.
For starters, the Marlins haven’t been playing well lately. Not only have they dropped six of their last eight games, but their only two victories during that span came against the Nationals and San Diego Padres — a pair of sub-.500 clubs.
In fact, Miami is 5-11 straight up in its last 16 games against teams that are above .500 as of Tuesday, Aug. 29. That isn’t exactly encouraging ahead of tonight’s contest.
Meanwhile, the Rays are on fire lately, looking for their third consecutive win this evening. Judging by recent history, there’s a good chance they’ll achieve that goal considering how Kevin Cash’s club is 8-1 straight up in its last nine outings against the Marlins.
If that wasn’t impressive on its own, the Rays have also won nine of their 10 previous trips to Miami, outscoring the Marlins by an average of 2.0 runs per contest with five shutout victories during that span.
The Rays are counting on starting pitcher Aaron Civale to help them continue their dominance over the Marlins.
The good news is that Civale has been solid since being acquired at the trade deadline, going 1-1 with a 3.54 ERA in four starts. He also thrives in enemy territory, proven by an impressive 1.86 ERA in nine previous road starts this season.
At the same time, Sandy Alcantara has been providing the Marlins with strong play on the mound. The 2022 NL Cy Young winner has been turning things around over the last two months, playing to a 2.84 ERA with 11 walks and 55 strikeouts over his last 63 1/3 innings.
Much to Alcantara’s dismay, the Rays are fantastic against righties. Not only are they 61-45 against right-handed pitchers in 2023, but they’re also batting .258 (No. 5 in the MLB) with a .781 on-base plus slugging percentage (No. 4) against hurlers from that side.

Even though oddsmakers like the Marlins, recent history proves that the Rays are the correct pick. Tampa Bay is one of the best teams and a World Series contender for a reason, whereas Miami has struggled to beat clubs with winning records.
As a result, taking the Rays at +100 on the moneyline makes the most sense. There isn’t much value in them covering the spread as underdogs, but there is positive value on the ML even if it’s only even odds.
When it comes to a Rays vs Marlins player prop, let’s take the under on Alcantara’s 6.5-strikeout total. As great as he can be, the 27-year-old has come up short on this prop three times in his last five games — including the last two.
With Tampa Bay only averaging 9.0 Ks in its last six outings, I have a tough time seeing Alcantara finishing with seven-plus strikeouts.
