See Picks & Statistics For The GameThe 2022 MLB trade deadline is only one day away and will see teams do what they can to improve their shot at winning a World Series. Nevertheless, there are still games to be played before then on Monday, Aug. 1, including a clash between the Boston Red Sox (51-52) and Houston Astros (67-36).
The Red Sox hope that a new month means a reversal of the club’s fortune. Boston went an abysmal 8-19 over the course of July, sending them to the bottom of the AL East. The Red Sox lost 13 of their last 17 games, proving that they have a tough task ahead of them tonight.
Meanwhile, it’s been business as usual for the Astros lately. They’re winners of eight of their last 12 games, which includes a 3-1 series victory over the Seattle Mariners this past week. A victory tonight would solidify their hold on the AL West lead.
Nathan Eovaldi gets the start in what could be his last game as a Red Sox pitcher if they decide to trade him tomorrow. The Astros will counter that decision with none other than Luis Garcia.
Here’s a look at BetOnline Sportsbook’s odds, along with the best bets to make, ahead of today’s Red Sox vs. Astros matchup.

Can Astros Continue Dominance at Home?
When it comes to tonight’s Red Sox vs. Astros matchup, Boston has to do something that few teams have done lately: beating Houston at Minute Maid Park.
Beating the Astros anywhere is tough, but they’re an impressive 10-4 in their last 14 home games. Over that span, they’ve outscored their opponents 70-50, which translates to an average finals core of 5 to 3.6.
What makes things even tougher for the Red Sox is that the Astros already have success against Eovaldi this season. The 32-year-old righty went up against Houston on May 17 and it’s safe to say that he likely wishes he forgot that performance.
Eovaldi gave up a grand total of nine runs on eight hits over just 1.2 innings. To make matters worse than they could possibly be, five of the hits that he surrendered were home runs. If he’s going to entice any potential trade suitors, he needs a stronger performance tonight.
Unfortunately, Eovaldi hasn’t played well whatsoever lately. He’s 0-1 in his last three starts with an 11.08 ERA and just eight strikeouts over his last 13 innings pitched. He’s given up six-plus hits each game over that span, giving up 16 total runs.
The good news for the Astros is that several of their players have done well at Minute Maid Park over the last 14 home games. Seven Houston players have at least 10 hits over that span, with five players being tied for the team lead with 13.
Infielder Aledmys Diaz is one player that’s stepped up, tying Yordan Alvarez for the most home runs (five) during Houston’s last 14-game stretch at home. On top of that, Diaz also has a .351/.400/.838 slash line, while Alvarez (.342) and Yuli Gurriel (.325) are also batting over .300.
Regardless, this is shaping up to be a tough game for the Red Sox, who clearly need a miracle to beat the Astros at Minute Maid Park.
Betting Trends for Red Sox vs. Astros
- Boston is 1-6 straight up in its last seven road games.
- Houston is 4-2 straight up in its last six games against Boston.
- The total has hit the under in eight of Boston’s last 11 road games against Houston.
- The total has hit the under in 13 of Houston’s last 20 games as the favorite.
Red Sox vs. Astros Prediction and Best Bets
Red Sox vs. Astros Prediction: Astros to win
Red Sox vs. Astros Best Bets: Astros -1.5 (+116 at BetOnline) & Over 7.5 (-114 at BetOnline)
For tonight’s Red Sox vs. Astros showdown, I’m going with the Astros to win. They’ve been the better team throughout the 2022 MLB season, whereas the Red Sox are on a downward spiral with no end in sight.
While I’m taking Houston to cover the spread, I also recommend going with the over on the total. As mentioned before, Eovaldi has been bad lately and the total has actually hit the over in eight of the last 11 Red Sox vs. Astros games, regardless of where they were played.
