The Red Sox have momentum on their side after rallying for last night’s 4-2 victory. The Rangers were actually up 2-1 late in the game until Boston scored three unanswered runs in the eighth inning before Chris Martin came in for his second save of the 2023 MLB season.

Red Sox vs Rangers Game Preview
This matchup is one between two teams that haven’t been playing to their potential lately. Both the Red Sox and Rangers are 1-4 in their last five games, respectively, while Texas has also lost 11 of its last 14 home games.
The Rangers’ biggest issue lately has been a lack of run production. They’ve only scored an average of 2.0 runs while playing to a minus-4.8 average run margin during a four-game losing streak.
It’ll be interesting to see if Texas can get much going against Boston starting pitcher Tanner Houck. On one hand, the 27-year-old RHP has struggled to pick up wins away from home this season, going 2-5 with a 4.75 ERA in eight road starts.
On the other hand, Houck’s coming off one of his best performances of the year. He just struck out seven batters without allowing a run on four hits in a 5-0 win over the New York Yankees last Thursday.
Meanwhile, Nathan Eovaldi gets a chance to face his former team for the second time this season. The Rangers hurler previously faced the Red Sox on July 6, giving up four earned runs and four walks over 5 1/3 innings as Boston won 10-6 at Fenway Park.
It’s beginning to look like that game shook Eovaldi’s confidence. Before that outing, the veteran pitcher was 10-3 with a 2.64 ERA in 17 starts. However, in four subsequent games since the loss, he’s only 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA.
Even with Eovaldi’s struggles, though, things look promising for the Rangers. After all, they’re at least 7-1 against their last eight AL East opponents, whereas the Red Sox have lost nine of their 13 previous outings against the AL West.
Red Sox vs Rangers Prediction (Sept. 19)
Have the Rangers been struggling? Yes, but all skids eventually come to an end and I predict that will happen tonight. Texas is better than its recent results and will find a way to build momentum before the playoffs arrive.
It won’t be pretty, but look for the Rangers to respond to last night’s defeat with a stronger showing at home.
Prediction: TEX 5, BOS 4

Even though he hasn’t played well lately, I’m taking Nathan Eovaldi to record over 4.5 strikeouts (-115).
The Red Sox are striking out a lot lately, averaging 9.9 Ks in their last seven games. They struck out at least 10 times in four of those contests, which includes last night.
After struggling against Boston earlier this season, expect Eovaldi to get back on track by striking out at least five of his former teammates tonight.
