See Picks & Statistics For The GameOne of MLB’s elder statesmen and one of its hottest young prospects take center stage in St. Louis on Saturday afternoon as Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals take on Hunter Greene and the Cincinnati Reds.
Last night, the Cardinals shook off a three-game sweep against the Rays by shutting out the Reds 2-0. 23-year-old righty Andre Pallante, making just his second MLB start, more than held his own opposite Reds ace Luis Castillo, tossing 5.1 shutout innings.
Today, 40-year-old Wainwright, making his 370th MLB start, will look to secure the series win for the Cardinals, while 22-year-old Greene will be aiming to follow up a gem against the Arizona Diamondbacks with his second straight win in his 12th MLB start.

Can Cincinnati Have Wainwright’s Number Yet Again?
In his long, successful MLB career, Wainwright has a winning record against the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, and Pittsburgh Pirates.
However, the same success has eluded him against Cincinnati, for whatever reason. In fact, of the 16 teams against whom Wainwright has logged at least ten regular season starts, he has a losing record against only the Reds.
In 37 career appearances against the Reds (32 starts), Wainwright is 10-16 with a 5.34 ERA. Even more astoundingly is the fact that he has been most successful in Cincinnati, where he is 7-7 with a 5.43 ERA in 21 appearances (19 starts). In 16 appearances (13 starts) in St. Louis, Wainwright is 3-9 with a 5.22 ERA.
His most recent win against Cincinnati was in Cincinnati on August 16, 2019, and his most recent home win against the Reds was on September 27, 2016. In his lone start against them this season, he took the loss on the road on April 24, allowing four runs, eight hits, and three walks in five innings in a 4-1 loss.
So, it’s safe to say that he is up against some pretty unpleasant history here.
But if there is something to be encouraged by, it is that he is pitching well going into today’s matchup. Since that defeat, he has six quality starts in seven starts. In that stretch, he is 3-2 with a 2.20 ERA, and has allowed just 12 runs (11 earned) in 45 innings.
Reds vs. Cardinals Prediction and Best Bets
Reds vs. Cardinals Prediction: Cardinals to win
Reds vs. Cardinals Best Bets: Cardinals -1.5 (+125 at Bovada Sportsbook, BetUS & MyBookie)
In his first start against the Cardinals, Greene allowed three runs in 3.1 innings in a 4-2 loss on April 22. He was still very much finding his feet then, but with more starts, he has begun to show why he is expected to do big things in the big leagues.
Greene is coming off of a seven-inning complete game in which he shut out the Arizona Diamondbacks and allowed only one hit and struck out eight (with no walks).
The magic number today for St. Louis might be three. Only once thus far this season have the Cardinals been held to fewer than three runs in three consecutive games. So, the odds are high that they will be able to tally at least three runs today after managing only one and two in their previous two games.
And if they can score even just three runs, that might be enough to get the win. When the Cardinals have scored three or more runs this season, they are 29-10, and that includes a 7-1 mark in games that Wainwright has started. And in his career, Wainwright is 171-40 in 269 starts in which St. Louis has scored three or more runs.
By contrast, the Reds are 2-7 in the nine Greene starts in which they have allowed three or more runs.
With the ML a bit out of reach with regards to value, the run line is where to turn to find value with the home team. Only seven of the Cardinals’ 33 wins this season have come by one run, including just three of their 17 home wins.
