Entering their Interleague series against the Detroit Tigers, the Arizona Diamondbacks might have been hoping that a visit from MLB’s worst road team would be a good opportunity to build a little head of steam as June comes to a close.
But the series could not have started any worse last night, as pitcher Merrill Kelly had one of his worst starts of the season, and the bats managed just a single run in a 5-1 loss.
Tonight, Arizona will look to shake off that result and pick up their seventh win in their last 20 games as they go up against rookie pitcher Alex Faedo, who has hit a tough spot after impressing in his first several MLB starts.

Faedo Facing Key Start After First Rough Patch of MLB Career
In his first seven MLB starts, Faedo may have had only one win, but he acquitted himself quite well to life in the big leagues. In those first seven starts, he allowed no more than two runs in any performance.
But even the best rookies will have a rough time at some point, and things have not gone well for Faedo in his last two starts for the Tigers.
- vs. Chicago White Sox (13-0 loss on 6/15): L, 3 IP, 9 H, 7 R (all ER), 2 HR
- at Boston Red Sox (5-2 loss on 6/20): L, 4.1 IP, 8 H, 5 R (4 ER), 2 BB
Thanks to these two starts, Faedo’s ERA has jumped from 2.92 to 4.67.
While he needs to be much better tonight against the Diamondbacks, he also needs adequate run support.
In his nine starts, the Tigers have scored three or more runs four times. Their record in those four games? 4-0. And their record in the other five starts? 0-5.
For his sake, Detroit’s five-run output last night might well be the worst thing he could have hoped for.
The Tigers have scored four or more runs in consecutive games only six times all season, and last Saturday (14) and Sunday (seven) against the Texas Rangers marked the first time that the Tigers were able to put up five or more runs in back-to-back games.
Detroit Tigers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction and Best Bets
Tigers vs. Diamondbacks Prediction: Diamondbacks to win
Tigers vs. Diamondbacks Best Bets: Diamondbacks ML (-154 at BetOnline) & Tigers/Diamondbacks UNDER 8.5 (+100 at Bovada Sportsbook, BetUS & BetMGM)
Davies has also been plagued by poor run support this season. In eight of his starts, the Diamondbacks have managed three or fewer runs, and they have lost all eight games. But in the six Davies starts in which they scored four or more, the D-backs are 5-1.
Faedo has a good opportunity to end his little blip tonight, but will it count for much? The Tigers are just 11-15 after a win and 8-21 as a road underdog, and if things go according to form, they will have trouble finding much success against Davies.
Davies has alternated great and not-so-great starts recently, which means that he is in line to toss at least seven scoreless innings for the third time in June, after he tossed 7.2 scoreless on June 4 against the Pirates and seven scoreless against the Reds eleven days ago.
The Diamondbacks failed to score enough to give Davies a deserved win in either start, but that won’t be the issue tonight.
Look for Davies and the D-backs to get the win tonight and for the under to hit as well, as there have been eight or fewer runs in six of the nine games that Faedo has started and 10 of the 14 games that Davies has started.
