See Picks & Statistics For The GameThe Detroit Tigers will look to keep their perfect week going tonight in Chicago as they seek a second straight win over the White Sox and a sixth straight overall.
In yesterday’s series opener, rookie pitcher Beau Brieske outdueled Chicago’s Dylan Cease, and the Tigers held off a ninth-inning rally to edge out the White Sox 2-1.
Tonight, Tarik Skubal will be aiming to end a five-game losing streak opposite Lucas Giolito, who has put together a couple of nice starts to put an ugly stretch behind him.

Is a Repeat of Last Night Likely in Chicago?
This time a month ago, Tarik Skubal looked like he could potentially become a dark horse AL Cy Young contender. After a win over the Pirates on June 7, Skubal sported a 5-2 record and a 2.33 ERA through 11 starts.
Those chances have gone out of the window and disappeared into thin air, as the 25-year-old lefty has lost all five of his starts since. And not only has he lost five straight starts, but he has also not pitched well in a single one.
Season Splits for Tarik Skubal
- First 11 Starts: 5-2, 2.33 ERA, 65.2 IP, 52 H, 20 R (17 ER), 10 BB, 70 K
- Last 5 Starts: 0-5, 9.00 ERA, 23 IP, 30 H, 23 R (23 ER), 14 BB, 20 K
In his first 11 starts, Skubal exited before five full innings only once–against the White Sox at home in his first start of the season–and went 6+ innings seven times. In his last five starts, he has made it through five innings only once, and he lasted only five innings in that one start.
But an inability to consistently produce at the plate, especially at home, continues to plague Chicago’s chances of repeating in the AL Central.
The White Sox are averaging just 4.07 runs per game at home this season and have scored three or fewer runs six times in their last eight home games (and have lost all six of those games).
At least Giolito has started to turn things around after a five-start stretch in which he went 1-3 with a 9.47 ERA and allowed 30 runs (27 earned) and 40 hits–including nine homers-in just 25.2 innings.
After wrapping up his June with his first quality start in over a month, Giolito opened July by picking up his first win since June 5. Last Sunday, he allowed just one run, three hits, and two walks and struck out seven to help the White Sox wrap up an impressive road sweep of the San Francisco Giants.
Detroit Tigers vs. Chicago White Sox Prediction and Best Bets
Tigers vs. White Sox Prediction: White Sox to win
Tigers vs. White Sox Best Bets: White Sox -1.5 (+128 at BetUS) & White Sox team total over 4.5 runs (+105 at BetMGM)
While the White Sox continue to frustrate on a frequent basis, things actually line up favorably for them to get the job done tonight.
The White Sox are hitting only .247 against right-handed pitchers, but they are hitting .285 against lefties. And while they are averaging one extra-base hit every 14.35 at-bats against righties, they are averaging one extra-base hit every 10.28 at-bats against southpaws.
In games started by a lefty, the White Sox are hitting .273 with 51 extra-base hits (33 doubles, a triple, 17 homers) and averaging 4.5 runs per game.
And in 65 games started by a righty, they are hitting .250 and averaging fewer extra-base hits (2.48) and runs per game (4.17) than against lefties. So, the odds are favorable for a productive night against the struggling Skubal.
Combine that with Detroit’s lack of success when it comes to righties (.218 BA overall, .224 and 3.09 runs per game in 58 games started by a righty vs. .247 BA and 3.42 runs per game in games started by lefties), and the home fans–and White Sox bettors–should go home happy tonight.
