First place in the AL East will be on the line this week as the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles meet in a four-game series at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. In today’s series opener, the Bronx Bombers will look to continue mashing after a big couple of days in Milwaukee, while the Birds will look to bounce back from a surprising home series loss to the Oakland Athletics.

After an 11-inning loss in their opener against the Brewers, the Yankees (19-10) broke out the bats in a big way on Saturday and Sunday to claim the series win. They hammered four home runs and racked up 19 hits in Saturday’s 15-3 win, then hit three home runs and tallied 18 hits in Sunday’s 15-5 win.

The Orioles (17-10) were headed for a series win yesterday as well, but they couldn’t seal the deal. They scored six runs in the first four innings but were blanked the rest of the way, and Kyle McCann’s ninth-inning two-run homer off Craig Kimbrel gave the A’s a 7-6 win and the series.

With April almost in the books, the Yankees and Orioles are two of six MLB teams with ten or fewer losses. Of those six teams, the Brewers (5-4) are the only one to not win 70% or more of their games following a loss.

Four of those six teams rank first through first in win percentage in games following a loss. Following NL East beasts Atlanta (a perfect 7-0) and Philadelphia (8-2) is Baltimore, who is 7-2 in games following a loss and 4-1 in games following a home loss.

So, you have to like the Orioles’ chances of returning to the win column today, especially when the Yankees have not won three consecutive games since a 10-2 start that featured five and four-game win streaks. They have had three opportunities to win three straight and suffered a close loss each time.

Rodriguez is coming off his worst start of the season, as he allowed seven runs and 11 hits in 4.1 innings in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels last Tuesday. But prior to that, he had allowed two or fewer runs in each of his first four starts of the season.

In a small sample size, Rodriguez has done well with shaking off subpar starts. Last season, he allowed six or more runs three times and won the following start twice. In the one he didn’t, he took a loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers in his first start back in the majors after being sent down to the minors for a month and a half.

The Yankees have won each of Schmidt’s five starts despite his occasional generosity with allowing baserunners, but all good things must come to an end. Take the O’s to take a low-scoring opener and tie things up atop the AL East.
