Teixeira Looks to Overcome Odds at UFC 275
Glover Teixeira has been one of the most consistent fighters in recent UFC history. There was a team when he couldn’t string together wins four or five years ago, but that’s all changed as he enters UFC 275 riding a six-fight winning streak.
The biggest of Teixeira’s last six wins came in his most recent at UFC 267 back in October. He squared off against the then-UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jan Blachowicz, defeating him in the second round with a rear-naked choke to capture his first-ever championship in the promotion.
It was an extremely feel-good moment for the Brazilian, who finally captured UFC gold at the age of 42.
Including his last victory, four of Teixeira’s last six victories have come by submission. His seven submission victories are the most in the light heavyweight division’s history and he’ll look to add more to that total come Saturday.
Unfortunately, that’s going to be easier said than done with Teixeira being the underdog across the board. Even though he’s the reigning champion, it’s hard to ignore what his opponent has done.
Prochazka hasn’t lost a fight since 2015 and has only submitted once in his career — way back in 2013. If Teixeira is going to successfully defend his title, he needs to figure out a way to beat such an unstoppable force.
It’ll be easier said than done, but a victory at UFC 275 would certainly solidify his career. Nevertheless, he’s overcome the odds before and can do it again.
Can Prochazka Continue Winning Streak?
One of the more impressive MMA stories in recent years has been Jiri Prochazka’s impressive winning streak.
As mentioned above, the Brno, Czechia native hasn’t lost a fight in nearly seven years. Since his last loss, Prochazka has won 12 consecutive fights, which includes winning the inaugural Rizin Light Heavyweight Championship before jumping ship to UFC.
Since joining UFC, Prochazka has defeated both Volkan Oezdemir and Dominick Reyes by second-round knockout. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the 29-year-old has actually won each of his last 10 fights by KO or TKO.
That doesn’t exactly bode well for Teixeira, who has three knockout losses in his career. He hasn’t been KO’d since 2017, but it also doesn’t help that two of his last four fights decided by knockout have resulted in losses for him.
At the end of the day, it isn’t all that difficult to see why Prochazka is the unanimous favorite. Aside from his winning streak, he’s also 13 years younger than Teixeira and likely has more gas in the tank.
If Prochazka doesn’t leave Singapore as the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, it’s safe to say that a lot of people will be surprised.
UFC 275 Betting Markets for Teixeira vs. Prochazka
As usual, there are also more in-depth betting markets to take advantage of ahead of the UFC 275 main event.
When it comes to the likeliest method of victory, BetOnline Sportsbook has Prochazka to win by KO/TKO at -125 odds. That isn’t surprising when you consider his 10-fight knockout streak, as well as the fact that he’s 25-2 in KO/TKO situations.
On the other hand, Teixeira’s top method of victory is to win by submission at +420. Yes, he’s one of the best light heavyweight submission artists, but that doesn’t help when his opponent hasn’t tapped out in nearly a decade.
BetOnline Sportsbook is also favoring Prochazka to end the fight in the first round at +270. If you’re looking to get exact, the favored method and round combo is a Prochazka first-round knockout victory at +290 odds.
Teixeira vs. Prochazka Fight Prediction
As UFC 275 approaches, I’m going with Prochazka becoming the new light heavyweight champion. He's younger and faster than Teixeira, which should cause some serious issues for the veteran.
As for the best bet, I’m going to take a Prochazka second-round KO/TKO victory at +550 odds. Each of his last two fights has ended in the second round and I have at least some confidence in Teixeira to survive the first. After that? Expect Prochazka to quickly shut things down.
