Fans were treated to some exciting mixed martial arts action over the weekend in the form of UFC Fight Night: Blaydes vs. Aspinall. Now, fans are turning their attention to the next event slated on the promotion’s schedule, UFC 277.

Pena vs. Nunes to Headline UFC 277

There’s a fight for everyone on the upcoming UFC 277 card, however, most eyes will be on the main event. UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Julianna Pena (11-4) aims to make her first-ever defense as she takes on the former titleholder, Amanda Nunes (21-5), in a rematch from UFC 269.

Neither woman has competed since their last encounter, so it’ll be interesting to see who comes out of the gate hungrier. Pena must prove that her victory was no fluke, but that won’t be easy against a competitor as tough as Nunes.

UFC 277 Main Event: Julianna Pena (+235) vs. Amanda Nunes (-320)

Nobody really expected Pena to walk out of UFC 269 with the women’s bantamweight championship. However, she was able to catch Nunes with a rear-naked chokehold in the second round, forcing the former champion to submit in front of thousands in Las Vegas.

Now, Pena must overcome the odds again to retain her gold. She was 2-2 in four fights prior to her winning the championship, leaving time to tell if that stretch was just a fluke or if she’ll be brought back down to earth this Saturday.

Meanwhile, Nunes will be out for blood at UFC 277. Before suffering her loss, the veteran Brazilian fighter had won 12 straight bouts, which included capturing the women’s bantamweight and featherweight titles along the way.

You don’t win that many fights in a row by accident and the fact that Nunes is still the featherweight champion only adds to her legitimacy. Yes, Pena pulled off the upset last time, but don’t expect Nunes to go down so easily in Dallas.

UFC 277 Co-Main Event: Brandon Moreno (-220) vs. Kai Kara-France (+168)

An interim UFC Flyweight Champion will be crowned this weekend when Brandon Moreno (19-6-2) steps into the octagon with Kai Kara-France (24-9).

Moreno is actually a former flyweight champion, having lost the title in his last fight against Deiveson Figueiredo back in January. The 28-year-old “Assassin Baby” showed a lot of fight in the five-round bout but must figure out how to rebound in the coming days.

Meanwhile, this will be Kara-France’s first crack at UFC gold. He’s been on a bit of a roll lately, winning three straight fights against Rogério Bontorin, Cody Garbrandt and Askar Askarov, knocking out the first two fighters.

Heavyweight: Derrick Lewis (-113) vs. Sergei Pavlovich (-113)

In one of the more even bouts of the UFC 277 card, Derrick Lewis (26-9) goes one-on-one with Sergei Pavlovich (15-1) in heavyweight action.

Arguably one of the best knockout artists in UFC history, success hasn’t been there for Lewis as of late. He’s been knocked out in two of his last three outings, which includes suffering a KO loss to Tai Tuivasa in his most recent fight just five months ago.

Pavlovich, on the other hand, is having the opposite experience. After getting knocked out by Alistair Overeem in his UFC debut, the former FNG Heavyweight titleholder has since won three straight fights via first-round knockout, earning ‘Performance of the Night’ honors twice.

Flyweight: Alexandre Pantoja (-164) vs. Alex Perez (+128)

Another fight that’s shaping up to be a close one is the flyweight matchup between Alexandre Pantoja (24-5) and Alex Perez (24-6).

It’s been a while since we’ve last seen Pantoja fight. He picked up a submission victory over Brandon Royval back in August 2021, marking his sixth win in his last eight fights. He also was named the performer of the night, making it interesting to see if he can parlay that into more momentum.

It’s been even longer since fans have watched Perez. He last stepped into a cage when he challenged Figueiredo for the UFC Flyweight Championship nearly 20 months ago. Perez was obviously unsuccessful in his attempt and now looks to restart his journey against Pantoja.

Light Heavyweight: Magomed Ankalaev (-480) vs. Anthony Smith (+330)

A pair of top-five light heavyweights will meet at UFC 277 when Magomed Ankalaev (17-1) looks to extend his dominance with a win over Anthony Smith (36-16).

After losing to Paul Craig by submission in his UFC debut, Ankalaev has rattled off eight victories in a row. Half of those victories have come by knocking his opponents out while the other four were won by unanimous decision.

While Smith may not have Ankalaev’s record, things are going well for him. He’s won three straight fights and is coming off a first-round submission win over Ryan Spann back in September.

UFC 277 Preliminary Card

Welterweight: Matthew Semelsberger (-174) vs. Alex Morono (+136)

A pair of welterweights will look for a crucial win when Matthew Semelsberger (10-3) takes on Alex Morono (21-7) this Saturday night.

Semelsberger has been tough to beat lately, going 7-1 in his last eight fives while recording four KO/TKO victories over that stretch. He’ll have his hands full with Morono, who has won four of his last five outings, including the most recent three in a row.

Lightweight: Drew Dober (+186) vs. Rafael Alves (-245)

Another UFC 277 fight that fans may want to keep an eye on is one between Drew Dober (24-11) and Rafael Alves (20-10).

In March, Dober snapped a two-fight losing streak with a TKO victory over Terrance McKinney. However, it’ll be tough to keep that moment going against Alves, who’s won six of his last seven fights with three of his last four victories coming by submission.

Welterweight: Michael Morales (-530) vs. Adam Fugitt (+360)

In what oddsmakers predict to be the most lopsided fight of the night, Michael Morales (13-0) looks to keep his undefeated streak intact against Adam Fugitt (8-2).

Morales has made a name for himself with his thrilling hard-hitting style, scoring knockout victories over 10 of his opponents. While Fugitt has, impressively, won four fights in a row, it’s going to be an uphill battle against an opponent who’s yet to taste defeat.

Heavyweight: Don'Tale Mayes (-146) vs. Hamdy Abdelwahab (+114)

Don’Tale Mayes (9-4) will also be engaging with Hamdy Abdelwahab (5-0) in a heavyweight collision at UFC 277 this weekend.

After losing back-to-back fights, Mayes has a new lease on life after winning two fights in a row. He looks to keep the ball rolling against the debuting Abdelwahab, who has knocked out each of the five opponents he’s faced in his young MMA career.

Lightweight: Drakkar Klose (-225) vs. Rafa Garcia (+172)

Fans will be treated to another lightweight bout as Drakkar Klose (12-2-1) hopes to continue his new momentum against Rafa Garcia (14-2).

Klose has won four of his last fights and is feeling good as he comes off a TKO win over Brandon Jenkins back in April. Only time will tell if he has what it takes to thwart Garcia, who’s won two straight fights following a slow start to his UFC career.

Welterweight: Orion Cosce (-174) vs. Mike Mathetha (+136)

Another welterweight fight will pit Orion Cosce (7-1) against Mike Mathetha (3-1).

Cosce was enjoying a perfect start to his MMA career before Philip Rowe knocked him out in his last fight almost exactly a year ago. Meanwhile, Mathetha is also looking for a bounce-back win after Jeremiah Wells submitted him at UFC 271 in February.

Light Heavyweight: Nicolae Negumereanu (+124) vs. Ihor Potieria (-158)

Nicolae Negumereanu (12-1) has a difficult task ahead of him when he takes on Ihor Potieria (19-2) at UFC 277.

While Negumereanu has won three fights in a row, he’s going to need his best effort in Las Vegas. Potieria has won 15 straight fights and hasn’t lost since July 2017. He can submit and knock out his opponents with ease, so it'll be interesting to see if he can do either against Negumereanu, whose sole career loss came by decision.

Women’s Flyweight: Ji Yeon Kim (-102) vs. Joselyne Edwards (-125)

Lastly, Ji Yeon Kim (9-5-2) looks to end her losing ways this weekend against Joselyne Edwards (11-4) in a women’s flyweight clash.

Despite an impressive start to her career, Kim has gone 1-4 in her last five fights, while each of those losses came by unanimous decision. Edwards also had issues finding a win lately but overcame that by she beat Ramona Pascual by unanimous decision in a featherweight fight last month.
