NASCAR Cup Series 2023 Verizon 200 at the Brickyard Predictions, Odds & Picks

After a few weeks of exciting finishes on ovals, the NASCAR Cup Series returns to the road this weekend for Sunday’s Verizon 200 at the Brickyard (2:30 pm ET, NBC).

In just two weeks, the NASCAR Cup Series regular season will come to an end with the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona. With multiple playoff spots still up for grabs, some drama could be on tap tomorrow.

The latest developments in the race to reach the playoffs won’t be the only things to watch out for at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

This weekend’s race will see Chicago street race winner Shane van Gisbergen return to the Cup Series after making his oval debut in Friday night’s Truck Series race.

He’ll be joined by Supercars Championship rival Brodie Kostecki, who will be making his NASCAR debut.

Kostecki and van Gisbergen are part of a tight battle for this season’s Supercars title, and both are expected to use their road course experience to good use this weekend, according to the pre-qualifying odds for the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard.

Verizon 200 at the Brickyard Predictions and Picks

While SVG’s win in Chicago was his first taste of action stateside, Kostecki, the current Supercars Championship points leader, has a bit of experience racing stock cars in the U.S.

In 2013, when he was 15, Kostecki raced in the K&N Pro Series East (now known as the ARCA Menards Series East). He did three races in 2013, then did 13 races in 2014.

Now, he gets to make his long-awaited debut in the NASCAR Cup Series, where he will represent Richard Childress Racing in the #33 car.

The immediate success that SVG had seems to have had an effect on oddsmakers, as both he and Kostecki find themselves among the leading contenders to win the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard.

Is either drive worth betting consideration this weekend? The odds aren’t ideal, both for the win and for high finishes.

Chris Buescher goes into the weekend seeking his third straight win after recording back-to-back wins in the Cook Out 400 at Richmond and the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan.

No one has won three straight Cup Series races since 2021, when Kyle Larson did it twice on the way to winning the championship.

Buescher isn’t among the favorites for the Verizon 200, but similar to the likes of Austin Hill and Josh Berry with Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard odds, oddsmakers might be selling Buescher short based on his road results thus far this season.

He finished eighth in the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas, fourth in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma, and tenth in the Chicago street race. Ahead of qualifying, he is +110 at BetUS to finish in the top ten.

There are a few other drivers outside of the group of Verizon 200 at the Brickyard favorites that offer a lot of value for a top-ten finish.

Austin Cindric has finished in the top ten in all of his Cup Series and Xfinity Series starts on the road course at IMS.

He won the Pennzoil 150 in 2021 and finished fifth in the 2020 edition of the race, and in his first two Verizon 200 starts, he finished ninth in 2021 and second behind Tyler Reddick in 2022.

This season, Cindric finished sixth at Circuit of the Americas and sixth in the Chicago street race. At BetUS, he is +125 to finish in the top ten for the third time on a road course this season.

Ty Gibbs enters this weekend in the 16th and final playoff spot, three points ahead of Michael McDowell in the standings after finishing fifth, 15th, and 11th in his last three races.

Gibbs has a good opportunity to move one step closer to landing in the playoffs as a Cup Series rookie. He finished ninth at Circuit of the Americas and in Chicago, and at Bovada, he is +140 for another top-ten finish.

Of course, a lot of the usual suspects are likely to be in the mix at or near the front of the field as well.

Kyle Busch has finished in the top five in all three road races thus far, coming in second at both Circuit of the Americas and Sonoma and fifth in Chicago.

At +190 (Bovada), he offers great value for a top-five finish in the Verizon 200, despite having only one top five in his last four races and finishing 37th and last at Michigan.

Martin Truex Jr. won at Sonoma, and the points leader has finished first, third, seventh, and second in his last four races.

Truex (nine) is second to Kyle Larson (ten) in top-five finishes this season, and he is +100 (at Bovada) to make it five straight top-ten finishes this weekend.

Along with last year’s Verizon 200 win, Reddick won at Circuit of the Americas earlier this season and won at Road America last year.

He and Kyle Larson are worth a look for a top-five or top-three finish at IMS, though neither is a recommended pick here.

There is one name yet to be mentioned whose absence to this point should be pretty notable.

Chase Elliott was the race winner pick for both the Toyota/Save Mart 350 and the Chicago street race, and he finished fifth at Sonoma and third in Chicago.

Elliott hasn’t been in the top five since Chicago and finished 36th last Sunday at Michigan, severely damaging his chances of being able to qualify for the playoffs without needing to win.

But among active full-time Cup Series drivers, he is the most successful on road courses, with seven wins.

The Verizon 200 at the Brickyard is his best shot to get the victory he needs to make the playoffs without a ton of help and good fortune. He missed out on adding Sonoma and Chicago to his list, but he won’t miss out on adding the IMS road course.
