32 down, four to go. In a few short weeks, the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series champion will be crowned at Phoenix Raceway. This weekend, the eight remaining championship contenders will try to lock up a spot in the Championship 4 with a victory in the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (2:30 pm ET, NBC).
Last week, the Round of 12 wrapped up in dramatic fashion at Charlotte. There, Kyle Larson scored his series-leading sixth win of the season at the Bank of America Roval 400.
Initially, it appeared that all four Hendrick Motorsports drivers would be in the Round of 8. However, Alex Bowman’s car failed post-race inspections for being too light, and the #48 car was disqualified from the race.
As a result of the DQ, Bowman dropped out of the Round of 8 field and in went two-time Cup Series champion Joey Logano. So, this round will instead feature three Hendrick cars, two Joe Gibbs Racing drivers, two Team Penske drivers, and one 23XI Racing representative, regular season champion Tyler Reddick, who overcame his own drama to stay in the title race.
2024 NASCAR Cup Series Standings (Entering the South Point 400)
- Kyle Larson – 4052
- Christopher Bell – 4032
- Tyler Reddick – 4029
- William Byron – 4023
- Ryan Blaney – 4019
- Denny Hamlin – 4015
- Chase Elliott – 4014
- Joey Logano – 4012
Larson enters the South Point 400 in a strong position to make the Championship 4 for the third time in four seasons with HMS. And he is looking for a season sweep at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where he won the Pennzoil 400 in March.
Larson, who will start fifth, is one of six Round of 8 participants who will start in the top ten in today’s race. At the front of the field is Bell, who will start on pole for the third time this season.

2024 South Point 400 Predictions & Picks
Christopher Bell to finish in the top five (+100 at Bovada)
Bell hasn’t won since the USA Today 301 at New Hampshire in June, but he has been the most consistent driver in the playoffs. He has finished no worse than 14th in the first six races and has three top-five finishes, including a runner-up finish in the Bank of America Roval 400.
The odds are against him converting his pole position into a victory, given how little success polesitters have had. But he has a strong chance to log his fourth top-five finish of the playoffs and his seventh in a dozen races.
William Byron to finish in the top five (+175 at Bovada)
Byron finished in the top three of all three Round of 12 races, coming in second at Kansas, third at Talladega, and third again last week.
Of Byron’s 17 top-ten finishes this season, 11 have come when he started in the top ten, including eight of his 11 top fives. He will start ninth in today’s race, and he should be at or near the front of the field down the stretch once again.
Tyler Reddick to win the South Point 400
The first six editions of this race were won by six different drivers, and all six were playoff drivers. Reddick, who will start on the front row with Bell, finished second behind Larson in the March race here. He had a stressful Sunday at Charlotte, but he is a strong pick to be the first driver to lock up a spot in the Championship 4.
