Michigan International Speedway is the setting for this weekend’s NASCAR action, as the Cup Series and Xfinity Series both move one week closer to the playoffs. The Cup Series will take the spotlight tomorrow with the FireKeepers Casino 400, while this afternoon the Xfinity Series will be front and center with the Cabo Wabo (Tequila) 250.
In last year’s edition of this race, Ty Gibbs took the checkered flag, one of his seven wins on the way to winning the Xfinity Series title.
Gibbs has made the step up to the Cup Series this season, and after a 15th-place finish at last week’s Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway, is only 18 points out of the final spot in the playoffs with four regular season races to go.
Improving his chances to reach the Cup Series playoffs as a rookie is only part of his agenda this weekend. Gibbs will also be looking to repeat as winner of this race, which is in its first year of being sponsored by tequila brand Cabo Wabo.
While that is not a subtle suggestion about what to perhaps do with part of your Saturday afternoon and early evening if you have no plans–responsibly and only if you are of legal age, of course–let’s take a look at the race odds, courtesy of Bovada.
The reigning winner is the favorite, with polesitter Josh Berry and John Hunter Nemechek, two of the top Xfinity Series championship contenders, not far behind.

Cabo Wabo 250 Predictions and Picks
Gibbs, who will start eighth, isn’t the only Cup Series driver doing double duty this weekend. Ross Chastain, who is seventh in points in the top-level series, is also taking part in the Cabo Wabo 250.
Chastain will start 11th in his fourth Xfinity Series race of the season, and a strong run in this race could give him a much-needed boost for Sunday’s Cup Series race. Since winning the Ally 400 in June, Chastain has finished outside the top ten in five consecutive races.
Cabo Wabo 250 Starting Lineup (Positions 1-16)
- Josh Berry
- Justin Allgaier
- Austin Hill
- Sam Mayer
- Riley Herbst
- Chandler Smith
- Carson Hocevar
- Ty Gibbs
- Sammy Smith
- John Hunter Nemechek
- Ross Chastain
- Brett Moffitt
- Cole Custer
- Brandon Jones
- Sheldon Creed
- Daniel Hemric
Of course, his position in the Cup Series standings guarantees nothing for the Cabo Wabo 250. However, Chastain is +220 to finish in the top five and +400 for a top-three finish, both of which represent excellent value.
All that said, most of this week’s picks center around the JR Motorsports stable, which consists of Berry, Justin Allgaier, Sam Mayer, and Brandon Jones.
Mayer took the win at last week’s Road America 180, his first Xfinity Series win, leading only the final two laps as he capitalized on late mistakes by Sage Karam and Parker Kligerman.
Current NASCAR Xfinity Series Points Standings (Through 20 Races)
- Austin Hill – 775 points
- John Hunter Nemechek – 761
- Justin Allgaier – 735
- Cole Custer – 691
- Josh Berry – 612
- Sam Mayer – 593
- Chandler Smith – 588
- Daniel Hemric – 579
- Sammy Smith – 557
- Riley Herbst – 530
- Sheldon Creed – 527
- Parker Kligerman – 505
Drivers in bold have won at least one race this season.
After finishing in the top five only once in his first 12 races this season, Mayer has five top-five finishes in his last eight races. The 20-year-old from Wisconsin will start fourth in the Cabo Wabo 250, and +275 to finish in the top five yet again is fantastic value.
Allgaier, who will start second, has finished out of the top five in his last four races since a third-place finish in the weather-shortened Loop 121. That is his longest such streak of the season, and he is -120 to prevent it from extending to five.
Berry has yet to win this year after winning three races last season, and like Allgaier, is currently on his longest run without a top-five finish. He’s looking to avoid a sixth straight race without a top five, and like Allgaier, he is -120 to do so.
Series points leader Austin Hill breaks up the JR Motorsports party in the front two rows, as he will start third. Hill has finished in the top three in each of his last three races, and he has finished in the top five in nine of his last 11 races. His finishing position odds are too good to pass up, as he is +120 for a top-five finish and +200 for a top-three finish.
But who is the pick to win the Cabo Wabo 250? That would be Gibbs. Sure, he is the favorite, but winning after starting ninth last year makes it easy to be confident that he can win from eighth this year.
