On Saturday, Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers started brightly against the New York Knicks, but a second-quarter injury scare for the 2023 NBA MVP helped tip Game 1 in the home team’s favor as they went on to win 111-104.

Tonight, the two teams face off in Game 2 at Madison Square Garden (7:30 pm ET, TNT). Will the 76ers head back home with a split, or will the Knicks take a 2-0 series lead to Philly?

The Knicks have advanced to the second round of the NBA playoffs only twice since 2000 (2013 and 2023), but they will take a big step towards a spot in the conference semifinals with a win tonight.

Entering this year’s playoffs, 416 of 449 teams (92.7%) who held a 2-0 lead went on to win the series (including best-of-five series, which ended in 2002). Since the NBA playoffs went to best-of-seven series for each round, 162 of 182 (89.0%) teams who took a 2-0 lead went on to win the series.

So, if the Knicks hold serve tonight, they will be in a strong position to move on to face either the Milwaukee Bucks or Indiana Pacers in the second round.

Saturday’s loss was just the ninth time in 41 games this season that the 76ers lost a game in which Embiid played.

Also, it was just their fourth loss in 16 road games this season with Embiid.

So, the percentages are favorable for Philadelphia to come away with a series-tying win tonight.

It’s also worth noting that, for the season, the Sixers are 10-6-1 ATS when they have been an underdog of five or more points. The accompanying SU record is a rather unsightly 4-13, but all 17 games were without Embiid, which is a notable piece of information when the Sixers are 32-9 with him and 16-27 without him this season.

That I like the 76ers in this spot is less to do with anything I think of the Knicks and more about what I think of the Sixers. In Game 1, New York did a great job of responding to fast starts by Embiid and Philadelphia, and that is certainly encouraging for their chances to win this series.

But the Sixers with Embiid are a tough team to beat, even when he is not at his best. And we should see him closer to his best tonight, given that he has yet to go four straight games this season without shooting 50% or better from the field.

If he does shoot 50% or better tonight, the 76ers will likely, given that they are 21-4 this season when he has hit that mark.
