Game 1 of the Jazz vs Grizzlies series saw Memphis score the road upset behind clutch plays on both ends of the court. But aided in part by Donovan Mitchell’s return to the lineup, Utah has gotten back to what dominated the Western Conference in the regular season. And the Grizzlies have not been able to keep up, which has their breakout season approaching the brink.
Even after losing Game 1, the Jazz were still fairly heavily favored to win the series. And over the last couple of games, they have shown that the lack of panic was justified. Mitchell’s return has certainly been a major factor, but he isn’t the only reason that Utah has back-to-back double-digit wins.
Will the Grizzlies be able to find an answer tonight and tie the series? Or will the Jazz move within a win of the second round?

Utah Jazz vs Memphis Grizzlies Matchup: Picks, Odds, Stats and More
Conley Making Major Contributions Against Former Team
Mitchell’s return has been big for the Jazz, but so has the play of former Grizzlies star Mike Conley, Jr.
In the regular season, Conley was fourth on the team in scoring at 16.2 points per game, behind Mitchell (26.4), NBA Sixth Man of the Year Jordan Clarkson (18.4), and Bojan Bogdanovic (17.0). That was an improvement from last season’s debut in Utah, when he averaged only 14.4 points per game in 47 games. But he wasn’t exactly a primary scoring option. In 51 games in the regular season, Conley scored 20+ points only 13 times in 51 games, and he posted consecutive 20+ point games only twice. Both times, he hit the mark in only two games in a row.
But against his former team, Conley is showing up and showing out in this series. He has three straight 20-point games, and he is averaging 23 points per game in the series. In Game 3, he scored 27 points and made a season-high seven threes.
Not only has Conley been pouring in the points more than usual, his numbers are up in other categories. He has 34 assists in the first three games of the series when he averaged six assists per game in the regular season. Also, he is averaging 5.3 rebounds per game in the series after averaging 3.5 rebounds per game in the regular season.
Can he keep this up throughout the postseason and not just against his former team? If he can, the Jazz could very well back up their new status as Western Conference favorites.
Mike Conley Game 4 Player Prop Odds (updated at 10:25 am ET)
- Points: OVER 17.5 (-112), UNDER 17.5 (-108)
- Rebounds: OVER 3.5 (-142), UNDER 3.5 (+116)
- Assists: OVER 8.5 (+114), UNDER 8.5 (-140)
It’s worth noting that among his alternate points totals, over 19.5 points is available at +140 at the time of writing, and 25+ points is +500. Given his scoring output thus far in the series and that he has 26 and 27 points in two games in Memphis this season, that is the kind of value that is too good to ignore even if he falls short of it.
A Two-Man Show Won’t Work for Memphis
The postseason experience that the Jazz vs Grizzlies series is giving Memphis’s young core is going to serve them well. You have to start somewhere, win or lose. The play-in tournament and this series is showing that the Grizzlies have the potential for a lot of success in the coming seasons.
It has been an especially notable experience for Ja Morant and Dillon Brooks, who have led the way for the Grizzlies.
Morant’s scoring and shooting were inconsistent in the regular season, but between the play-in tournament and this series, he has picked it up when it has mattered most. He is averaging 31.2 points per game over the five games, and he is shooting 48.7 percent from the field, an improvement from the 44.9 percent he shot in the regular season. His outside shooting is still a work in progress, as he has made only 4 of 15 threes in this series, but he is nailing 58.2 percent of his two-point shots.
Brooks, meanwhile, is averaging 27 points per game in this series and also scored a team-high 24 in the play-in win over the San Antonio Spurs. This is coming off of the heels of a career-best regular season, in which he was second on the team with 17.2 points per game.
But the Grizzlies have not gotten enough from everyone else. That minimizes the margin for error when it comes to struggling elsewhere. And the Grizzlies are struggling elsewhere, when it comes to defense and with outside shooting. If the Grizzlies cannot get more from the rest of their starting lineup and their bench, they don’t stand a chance tonight or in Wednesday’s Game 5 in Salt Lake City.
Jazz Must Maintain Momentum to Secure Second Win in Memphis
If there were any concerns about the Jazz after their Game 1 loss, they have wiped them away.
The expectation is for that to continue tonight, as the Jazz are the consensus spread play among our selection of Jazz vs Grizzlies picks. If they continue to do what they have done in the last two games, they will back that up.
Morant and Brooks are getting theirs, but the Jazz have not allowed anyone else to beat them. No one other than that duo has hit the 20-point mark for the Grizzlies in any game in the series. Meanwhile, the Jazz have gotten 20-point games from Mitchell, Conley, Bogdanovic, and Rudy Gobert.
If the Jazz continue to do what has worked for them in their last two wins, they will head back home with a chance to clinch the series on Wednesday. With the Clippers vs Mavs series set to go at least six games and the other Western Conference series also guaranteed of going at least six games, a win tonight could help set the Jazz up well for their next two series.
