This NBA season has not gone according to plan for the Brooklyn Nets, in more ways than one. But with the postseason on the horizon, the Nets appear to be headed in the right direction. And with a win over the Indiana Pacers to close out the regular season, the Nets will lock up the #7 seed and a home play-in tournament game on Tuesday.
Pacers Look to Help Cavs and Themselves in Brooklyn
While the Pacers are well out of the NBA playoff hunt, they won’t be just a neutral spectator for any drama that could occur today. The Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers have identical 43-38 records, but after the Nets beat the Cavs on Friday, they hold the #7 seed in the Eastern Conference, while the Cavs sit eighth.
This matters for the Pacers because Indiana owns a lottery-protected 2022 NBA Draft first-round pick from Cleveland from the February trade that sent Caris LeVert from the Pacers to the Cavs and Ricky Rubio from the Cavs to the Pacers.
If the Cavs successfully navigate the play-in tournament and reach the first round of the playoffs, they will not be in the lottery, which would therefore give the rebuilding Pacers a valuable first-round pick to use as they please. Finishing in the #7 spot in the East would give the Cavs potentially two home games to lock up a place in the first round.
So, along with rooting for the Cavs to beat the Bucks, the Pacers have to do their part and somehow win at Barclays Center. As such a heavy underdog, it would be a serious upset. But stranger things have happened, and some extra motivation can sometimes go a long way.

Can the Pacers Do the Unthinkable and Deny the Nets the #7 Seed?
Though the Nets aren’t guaranteed to even be one of the teams still standing when the first round of the NBA playoffs begins on Sunday, April 16.
But that doesn’t keep them from continuing to occupy a prominent spot in 2022 NBA championship odds. In fact, the Nets, at +650 odds, are the third favorite to win the NBA Finals, behind only the Phoenix Suns (+270) and Milwaukee Bucks (+550).
And the Nets are on the rise at the right time, as they head into their regular season finale with three straight wins. All three wins are by double digits, including Friday’s 118-107 win over the Cavs.
In the win over Cleveland, Kyrie Irving made only seven of his 22 field-goal attempts. But with Kevin Durant scoring 36 on 11 of 20 shooting (4-6 on threes and 10 of 10 at the stripe) and Bruce Brown, Seth Curry, and Andre Drummond all scoring in double figures, the Nets were able to win comfortably.
A fourth straight double-digit win for the Nets is the most likely outcome in this matchup. By winning and taking care of the part of the equation that they can control, the result in the Bucks vs. Cavs matchup would be rendered irrelevant for the Nets.
Beyond that, Indiana has been bad lately. Well, they have not been good for most of the season. But they have been especially bad in recent weeks. Since beating the Portland Trail Blazers 129-98 on March 20, the Pacers have lost nine games in a row.
The Pacers have given up 120+ points in eight straight games and have allowed five 130-point performances five times in that span, including each of their two most recent games.
Last 10 Games for Indiana
- Memphis Grizzlies (road): lost 133-103
- Toronto Raptors (road): lost 131-91
- Atlanta Hawks (home): lost 132-123
- Denver Nuggets (home): lost 125-118
- Boston Celtics (road): lost 128-123
- Detroit Pistons (home): lost 121-117
- Philadelphia 76ers (home): lost 131-122
- Philadelphia 76ers (road): lost 133-120
Is there anything positive for the Pacers? Well, the season is almost over, and they do have some assets to build with, whether they keep those assets, trade them for other players, or trade them to enhance their NBA Draft capital.
Indiana Pacers vs. Brooklyn Nets Prediction and Best Bets
Brooklyn Nets 128, Indiana Pacers 106 (Nets -15.5)
If you are a Cavs or Pacers fan, it may be nice to drift and daydream about the Pacers knocking the Nets out of the seventh seed.
But as nice as that idea may be, it is very, very, very unlikely. Now, should you place a bet on this big of a spread? There are certainly a number of better options on the NBA betting board today, since all 30 teams are in action to close out the regular season.
Best Prop Picks for Pacers vs. Nets
Kevin Durant OVER 31.5 Points (-116 at BetOnline Sportsbook)
Durant has had his way this season with most of the NBA teams that won’t make the playoffs, including the Pacers. Last time he faced Indiana, he had 39 points (15 of 24 FG), eight rebounds, and seven assists in a 129-121 road win on January 5.
KD enters this matchup with back-to-back 30-point performances, which is big for both this prop pick and the Nets’ hopes of success in the coming week and beyond.
And along with his 36-point outing against the Cavs on Friday, he had 32 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists at Madison Square Garden in a win over the Knicks this past Wednesday, posting his third triple-double of the season.
The only point of concern is how long he will play if the Nets do indeed blow it open early. But as one of the most lethal scorers in NBA history, he is more than capable of knocking out 32+ points in three quarters, especially against one of the worst teams in the league.
