While it was much too late to influence the NBA MVP race, Joel Embiid’s timely return has the Philadelphia 76ers poised to potentially lock up one of the top six seeds in the Eastern Conference. A win tonight over the Orlando Magic (7:00 pm ET, Bally Sports Florida/NBC Sports Philadelphia) will send the 76ers into Sunday’s regular season finale in a strong position.

With six consecutive wins, the Sixers (45-35) are a game behind the Magic (46-34) and Indiana Pacers (46-34), who currently occupy the fifth and sixth seeds in the East.

Whether the Sixers lock up a top-six seed or have to deal with the play-in tournament, Embiid’s return to health makes them a team that will be tough to take on in the postseason.

It’s very much stating the obvious, but having Joel Embiid on the floor is a heck of a lot better than not having Joel Embiid on the floor.

In games played without Embiid, the Sixers are 15-27 SU and 19-22-1 ATS this season. In games played with Embiid, the Sixers are 30-8 SU and 27-11 ATS.

At home, the Sixers are 18-5 SU and 17-6 ATS with Embiid and 5-11 SU and ATS without him.

Since Embiid’s return, Philadelphia is 5-0 SU and ATS, including an April 6 win at Memphis that Embiid did not play in.

Embiid is listed as questionable for tonight’s game against the Magic, but given that the Sixers haven’t played since Tuesday, we should see him on the court tonight.

If we do, it’s highly, highly likely that the home team will both win outright and cover the spread.

The Magic, at 50-30 ATS, have the NBA’s best record against the spread. No other team has covered 50 times, and only the Dallas Mavericks (48-32 ATS) could reach that number.

But they are just 4-6 SU and ATS in their last ten games as an underdog, and they are 0-3 SU and ATS in their last three road games.
