Mavericks vs Timberwolves NBA on TNT Predictions & Picks (10/29)

The Mavericks and Timberwolves are sporting matching 2-1 records as they head into Tuesday night’s showdown. They’re also both coming off of wins, leaving time to tell whose momentum will continue growing.

The Mavericks were in action less than 24 hours ago, notching a 110-102 home win over the Utah Jazz. Kyrie Irving scored a game-high 23 points while Luka Doncic added 15 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists. Klay Thompson also continued his hot start to the campaign, registering 18 points while shooting 4-of-11 (36.4%) from deep.

As for the Timberwolves, they’re looking for their third straight win after Saturday’s 112-101 victory against the Toronto Raptors. Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle each tallied 24 points in the win while Rudy Gobert made his presence felt with a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double.

It’s worth noting that the Mavericks performed well in the second half of back-to-backs last season, going 9-5 SU in those contests. Meanwhile, the Timberwolves are an impressive 24-12 SU when playing with two or three days of rest since the beginning of the 2022-23 NBA season.

Will two days of rest help lead the Timberwolves to a win over the Mavericks?

When it comes to the recent history between these teams, the Timberwolves went 3-1 SU across four meetings with the Mavericks during the 2023-24 regular season. Having said that, Dallas got revenge once the playoffs arrived, eliminating Minnesota in five games during the Western Conference Finals.

Neither side has been lighting up the league offensively this season, meaning this game could come down to defense. The Mavericks have a slight edge in that department as they rank seventh in points allowed and fifth in defensive efficiency while the Timberwolves sit eighth and ninth, respectively. Opponents are also only shooting 42.2% from the floor against Dallas (5th) compared to 45.3% vs. Minnesota (14th).

Interestingly enough, the Mavs held the Timberwolves to an average of 105.6 points on .457/.361/.726 splits during their WCF series.

Regarding injuries, the Timberwolves boast a perfect bill of health while Maxi Kleber (hamstring) will continue missing time for the Mavericks.

Will the Mavericks win their third straight game tonight? 

Looking for revenge for what happened in the playoffs, I’m taking the Timberwolves to win tonight. The Mavericks won’t go down without a fight, however, defeating the T-wolves at Target Center isn’t an easy task. I expect Minnesota to step up defensive to shut down Doncic & Co., eventually exacting revenge for the WCF elimination.

But no matter who wins, the Under on the 222.5-point total is the right call. Again, these teams are among the league’s best in terms of defense and I just don’t see a ton of points being scored. The Mavericks and Timberwolves only averaged a combined 217 points in the Western Conference Finals, finishing with the Under on this prop in three of those encounters.

Unless both sides completely abandon their game plans, I don’t expect we’ll see much offense at Target Center.

Coming off his best performance of the 2024-25 NBA season, I’m going with Mike Conley o4.5 assists (-136) for the best Mavericks vs. Timberwolves player prop.

Conley excelled at playmaking against the Raptors over the weekend, tallying a season-high six assists in just under 26 minutes of action. The 37-year-old veteran now gets to face the Mavericks, who are allowing the fourth-most assists to point guard to begin the campaign. The Over is also 5-5 in Conley’s last 10 games vs. Dallas — a span in which he averaged 4.9 APG.

With 16 assists in his last three regular-season meetings with the Mavericks, I’m confident that Conley will register at least five helpers tonight.
