The 2022-23 NBA Season kicks off on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Naturally, fans are excited to see the league’s biggest names take the floor once again. However, it’s also important to put respect one role players’ names, especially when it comes to the 2023 NBA Sixth Man of the Year race.
The Miami Heat’s Tyler Herro took home 6MOY honors following the 2021-22 season. The Milwaukee, WI native averaged 20.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists with .447/.399/.868 shooting splits while playing 56 of his 66 games off the bench.
Can Herro repeat as a back-to-back winner? Only time will tell, but BetOnline Sportsbook’s latest odds do shed some light on how the race could unfold. Here’s a look at those NBA Sixth Man of the Year odds, as well as Betting News’ picks for the award.

NBA Sixth Man of the Year 2023 Picks
Tyler Herro to Win (+1000)
Always an outside shooting threat, Herro has earned a reputation as one of the NBA’s best bench players even before he won last year’s award. Now, at +1000 odds, he’s a great pick to repeat as the NBA Sixth Man of the Year.
While it doesn’t happen too often, five players have previously been named 6MOY multiple times. Lou Williams was the most recent individual to accomplish the feat, having taken home the honors three times between 2015 and 2018.
With Herro only starting in 33 of his 175 career games played, it’s safe to say that he’ll be coming off the bench again this season. He’s always been able to take advantage of weaker matchups, so continuing to do so will only elevate his odds.
At the end of the day, Herro should be good for at least 20 PPG as the Heat’s sixth man. Considering how there aren’t exactly a ton of bench players who possess that level of offense, keep an eye on the 22-year-old in this year’s 6MOY race.
Bones Hyland to Win (+2000)
Bones Hyland had his fair share of ups and downs during his rookie campaign last year. However, he showed improvement as the season went on, leading to his being a solid pick for the 2023 NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award.
Before the All-Star break, Hyland was averaging 8.8 PTS/2.7 REB/2.0 AST while averaging 18 minutes played in 46 games (43 off the bench). He then proceeded to take his game to the next level after the break, averaging 12.8 PTS/2.7 REB/4.7 AST in 23 games (one start) to close out the year.
Even in the five playoff games he played, Bones impressed onlookers. While his stats might not be eye-popping at first, he did average 19.0 PTS and 6.6 AST per 36 minutes, indicating that he could put up some impressive numbers with a bit more playing time off the bench.
Fortunately, the former VCU product should see a solid role this year. He’s slated to be the No. 2 point guard behind the returning Jamal Murray, so there should be no shortage of opportunities for him to make his case to be named the league’s best sixth man.
Kevin Love to Win (+4600)
After spending the majority of his career as a starter everywhere he went, Kevin Love took up a bench role on the Cleveland Cavaliers last season. The move winded up paying off as he averaged 13.6 PTS and 7.2 REB while coming off the bench in 70-of-74 games played.
By the end of the season, Love finished as the runner-up to Herro in the 2022 NBA Sixth Man of the Year race.
With Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen continuing to improve in the frontcourt, it’s more than likely that Love will continue his bench role. After all, if it’s not broken, why try and fix it?
Besides, Love’s 21.8 PTS and 11.6 REB per 36 last season were the best they’ve been since the 2018-19 season, so being a bench player certainly helped him turn back the clock.
Another thing to make note of is that Love’s 2.5 defensive win shares last season were tied for the fourth-best total of his career. Furthermore, 5.7 win shares were the most since the 2017-18 NBA campaign — the last time that he made an All-Star team.
The proof of Love being a major bench threat is undeniable. He may no longer be the perennial top player that he once was, but he’s still more than capable of being this season’s NBA Sixth Man of the Year.
