Pacers vs. Nets (October 31): Can Indiana repeat suprise Saturday success in Brooklyn?

Last week couldn’t have gone any worse for the Brooklyn Nets as a franchise, both on and off of the court. On the court, the Nets failed to win any of their four games, including Saturday’s 125-116 loss at home to the Indiana Pacers, who return to Barclays Center tonight with a sweep in their sights.

Any hope that the Nets would be a championship contender this season seems to up in flames already, and Kyrie Irving’s remaining trade value seems to be joining it.

The Nets are only six games into their season, but this week shapes up to be a pivotal one. They have four very winnable games, and if they have another losing week, it’s hard to see owner Joe Tsai persisting with things as they are for much longer.

Can they right the ship? It has to start tonight with faring better against the Pacers than they did in Saturday’s matchup, in which they were outplayed by a team that was missing Myles Turner, who should be back in action tonight.

In their losses, the Nets have given up 130, 134, 110, 129 (in overtime), and 125 points. When Ben Simmons appears to be allergic to scoring and you aren’t getting enough from the supporting cast, you’re not going to go very far when you are a terrible defensive team.

Of the guys most capable of providing a scoring punch beyond Kyrie and Kevin Durant, Seth Curry is questionable for tonight after missing all five of his threes in his season debut on Saturday, and Patty Mills and Joe Harris haven’t really been major factors yet.

There are certainly going to be nights where KD and Kyrie do enough to get the job done even with minimal support, and tonight might well be one of those nights.

But the combo of KD and Kyrie doesn’t have the same fear factor it used to, and a team with so numerous issues and clouds hanging over it is going to have a lot of difficult games, win or lose.

The Pacers might not be good, and they have a lot of youth, but they are playing hard. That effort has been rewarded with back-to-back wins, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them win tonight, especially with Turner back in the lineup.

That said, I do think the Nets will manage to pull this one out. But I don’t see them blowing away the pesky Pacers and think that Indiana will cover.

This spread is larger than it should be, and I like the opportunity that presents for backing the visitors to at least keep things respectable.
