Will 76ers Heavily Use Starting 5 Once Again?

One reason why the 76ers walked out of Philadelphia with the Game 2 victory is that they heavily used their starting lineup and it paid off.

Each of the 76ers’ Game 2 starters played at least 37 points on Monday, highlighted by Embiid’s 31-point, 11-rebound double-double. The 2021-22 NBA MVP candidate was tough to contain, proven by him going 9-of-16 from the field and 12-of-14 from the free-throw line.

James Harden saw a team-high 41 minutes of action in Game 2, however, he’s still not playing up to his standards. Although he’s averaged 10.0 assists in the first two contests, his 18.0 points per game and .346 field-goal percentage aren’t exactly confidence-inducing.

Nevertheless, the duo of Tyrese Maxey and Tobias Harris picked up the slack, going a combined 15-of-22 from the field for 43 points. If Harden’s struggles are to continue, Maxey and Harris keeping up their own pace will help Philadelphia in the long run.

The 76ers will also be without Matisse Thybulle in Game 3 due to him not being fully vaccinated against COVID-19, therefore, being unable to enter Canada. He’s one of his team’s top defenders, so it’ll be interesting to see how the 76ers make up for his absence.

Going down 2-0 in a playoff series is never easy, especially when a team like the Raptors is dealing with injuries to key players.

Barnes (foot) missed Game 2 as he continues walking with a boot following his Game 1 injury. While Trent managed to suit up on Monday despite being doubtful, he wound up exiting the game early due to an illness and didn’t return.

If Barnes and Trent are both forced to miss Wednesday’s contest, the rest of the Raptors’ top players must step up in their absence.

Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet both had forgettable Game 2 performances. Arguably Toronto’s best active players, the duo combined for just 40 points on Monday despite both playing at least 40 minutes, going a combined 14-of-43 (.326) from the field.

The Raptors’ best player in Game 2 was, without a doubt, OG Anunoby. Playing just over 38 minutes, Anunoby finished with a team-high 26 points as he shot .714 from the field and .571 from beyond the arc.

Toronto’s main issue in Game 2 was its supporting cast was nowhere to be found. While Chris Boucher had 17 points off the bench, the quartet of Precious Achiuwa, Malachi Flynn, Khem Birch and Thaddeus Young combined for only 14 points. That just won’t cut it against a team like the 76ers.
