Suns vs Clippers NBA Predictions & Picks (10/23)

The 2023-24 NBA season didn’t go as either team hoped as both the Suns and Clippers suffered first-round playoff exits. Phoenix couldn’t get anything going as it was swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves while LA didn’t perform that much better, falling to the Dallas Mavericks in six games.

The Suns’ key to having a better season is for their ‘Big 3’ — Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal — to stay on the court together. The trio only suited up in 41 games together last year, highlighting just how important it is for them to stay healthy this season. They’re three All-Start-caliber players who can make quite the difference if they’re all playing to their potential.

Meanwhile, the Clippers look a bit different after losing Paul George to free agency. Although they still have Kawhi Leonard, they’ll be without him tonight as he’s sidelined for the time being with a knee injury.

In other words, it’ll be up to James Harden to carry the offensive load tonight. The former NBA MVP averaged 16.6 points, 8.5 assists, and 5.1 rebounds with .428/.381/.878 shooting splits in his first campaign with the Clippers.

The Clippers will be without Kawhi Leonard (knee) tonight. 

The Clippers got the better of the Suns during the 2023-24 campaign, winning three of the four matchups between the two teams. At the same time, Tyron Lue’s team tends to struggle against Phoenix at home.

The Suns are 5-1 SU with a plus-6.5 average scoring margin in their last six road games against the Suns, winning four of those matchups by double digits. It’s also worth noting that LA went 2-5 SU as home underdogs last season while Phoenix played to a 16-10 SU record as the away favorite.

Taking all of the above into account, I’m predicting a Suns victory tonight. Even if it’s the Clippers’ Intuit Dome debut, the fact that they’re going to be without Leonard is concerning. Phoenix players will have a much easier time scoring with LA’s top player in action, which should result in a season-opening win for the visitors.

With that in mind, I’m confident that the Suns will cover the spread on the road tonight.

As his team’s likely No. 1 option tonight, I’m taking James Harden to record o2.5 threes made (-148) for the best Suns vs. Clippers player prop bet.

Even if he’s no longer in his prime, Harden remains a perimeter threat. The 10-time NBA All-Star averaged 2.6 threes made on 38.1% shooting last season, finishing with the Over on this prop in 29 of his appearances. He’s also averaging 3.9 threes made with a 40.2% success rate in his last 12 games against the Suns, tallying at least a trio of three-pointers 10 times during that stretch.

Considering how he finished with the Over in both of his encounters with the Suns last season, look for Harden to continue his success from deep tonight.
