Tonight, the curtain will close on the 2024 men’s Final Four and the college basketball season as UConn and Purdue meet for the national championship at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona (9:20 pm ET, TBS).
Last year, UConn defeated San Diego State to win the program’s fifth national championship, joining UCLA (11), Kentucky (8), North Carolina (6), Duke (5), and Indiana (5) as the only programs with five or more championships.
With a win over the Boilermakers, who are seeking their first title in their second appearance in the title game, the Huskies will move into elite company with the Bruins, Wildcats, and Tar Heels.
After the Huskies defeated the Aztecs at NRG Stadium in Houston, UConn big man Adama Sanogo was named Final Four Most Outstanding Player. Sanogo put up 21 points and 10 rebounds in the semifinals against Miami then had 17 points and 10 rebounds in the title game.
By taking home Final Four MOP honors, Sanogo became the first big man to do so since Kentucky’s Anthony Davis in 2012.
But this year’s odds favor back-to-back big man wins, no matter who cuts down the nets in Glendale. UConn’s Donovan Clingan and Purdue’s Zach Edey tower over the competition on a normal basis, and they stand tall as the favorites to be named Most Outstanding Player tonight.

Final Four Most Outstanding Player Favorites
Edey has been the best player in college basketball each of the last two seasons, but will he become only the sixth men’s college basketball player to win both the Wooden Award and Final Four Most Outstanding Player in the same season?
Louisville’s Darrell Griffith (1980), Kansas’s Danny Manning (1988), UCLA’s Ed O’Bannon (1995), Duke’s Shane Battier, and Davis are the other five to do so.
Edey has led Purdue’s title push all season and was at the forefront of their efforts in Saturday’s 63-50 win over NC State. He had 20 points (9 of 14 FG, 2 of 2 FT), 12 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks against the Wolfpack.
But he is currently running second to Clingan, who is one of four Huskies with short odds. With UConn firmly favored to become the first team to repeat since Florida in 2006 and 2007, Most Outstanding Player odds heavily lean in their favor.
After scoring 22 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and blocking five shots in UConn’s Elite Eight rout of Illinois, Clingan had 18 points (8 of 14 FG, 2 of 2 FT), five rebounds, and four blocks in the Huskies’ 86-72 Final Four win over Alabama on Saturday.

Clingan wasn’t UConn’s leading scorer, however. That was Castle, who tied a season/career high with 21 points (7 of 13 FG, 2 of 6 3PT, 5 of 6 FT) and added five rebounds and two assists.
If Castle wins, he would be the first freshman to do so since Duke’s Tyus Jones in 2015 and the fifth since 1972 (when eligibility for freshmen was implemented in NCAA basketball), joining Louisville’s Pervis Ellison (1986), Syracuse’s Carmelo Anthony (2003), Davis, and Jones.
The other two top contenders for UConn are Newton and Spencer, who are the team’s top two scorers. Newton (14.9 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 6.2 APG) had 12 points, nine assists, and three rebounds against Alabama. Spencer (14.4 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 3.7 APG) had 14 points (3 of 5 3PT), eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals against the Crimson Tide.
If a Purdue player other than Edey wins it—which is highly, highly, highly unlikely—Smith is the best candidate. However, he scored only three points against NC State.
