It isn’t one of the numerous high-profile games on today’s college basketball schedule, but tonight’s encounter between future Big 12 foes Arizona State and TCU (10:00 pm ET, ESPNU) bears following, even if you think you are tapped out after a marathon day of magnificent matchups.
The Sun Devils (6-3) are in Fort Worth looking to bounce back from a surprising 89-84 loss at San Diego last Saturday. In Bobby Hurley’s tenure, ASU was 75-15 when scoring 80+ points prior to the matchup with Steve Lavin’s Toreros, who were six down with six minutes left but went on a 13-0 run to set up the upset.

The Horned Frogs (7-1) are also coming off of a loss last Saturday. In a battle of undefeated teams, they fell 74-66 to Clemson in the Hall of Fame Series in Toronto.
Though it was ultimately for naught, Arizona State scored a season high in the loss to USD, reaching 80 points for just the second time this season.
That, however, isn’t unfamiliar for TCU, who had scored 80+ points in every game before running into PJ Hall and the Tigers. Will the scoring resume for the Horned Frogs tonight?

Arizona State vs TCU Prediction and Picks
Prediction: TCU to win
After going 11-20 in Lavin’s first season, San Diego is off to an 8-4 start this season. Still, the Sun Devils’ loss to the Toreros most certainly falls into the “bad loss” category and will stay there unless USD far exceeds expectations in the West Coast Conference.
Unfortunately, head-scratching non-conference losses are becoming the norm for ASU. Three seasons ago, there was a home loss to UTEP. Two seasons ago, it was a home loss to UC Riverside. Last season, it was a loss at Texas Southern and a 37-point loss at San Francisco.
That’s a concern in and of itself, but the bigger concern as it pertains to tonight is how Arizona State has performed against its best opposition this season. Mississippi State dispatched them by 15 (71-56) to open the season, and BYU blew them away by 28 (77-49) on Thanksgiving Day.
TCU has played a pretty atrocious non-conference schedule, and this will go down as their best win with only Old Dominion and Texas A&M Commerce left before Big 12 play starts next month.
That may well cost them in March, but those are problems to deal with for later, right? It does mean that winning tonight is an absolute must, as well as hoping ASU gets on a nice run to make the win more attractive. We’ll see if the Sun Devils do their part from here, but the Horned Frogs will do their part tonight.

Arizona State’s offensive numbers for the season are pretty unsightly, but their performance against San Diego, other than continued poor free-throw shooting, showed that potential is there.
For that reason, I think they can at least do their part to help the total go over tonight, though I expect TCU, who is one of the highest scoring teams in the country (88.5 PPG), to do the heaviest lifting there.
