After cruising by Cal State Fullerton to open the new college basketball season, Matt Bradley and San Diego State will look to move to 2-0 tonight when they take on visiting BYU.
The Aztecs aren’t renowned for their scoring, but they went for 80 points on Monday night in their season-opening 23-point win over the Titans.
It was just a seven-point game at halftime, but SDSU outscored CSF 48-32 in the second half to win comfortably.
They could very well have a more competitive matchup on their hands tonight against BYU, who opened with a tight win over Idaho State on Monday.
The Cougars beat the Aztecs at home last season and upset a ranked San Diego State squad at Viejas Arena in 2020, but they face long odds to repeat the feat in this matchup.

BYU vs. San Diego State Prediction and Best Bets
BYU vs. San Diego State Prediction: San Diego State to win
Season openers aren’t particularly indicative of much, but based on what each team did on Monday, San Diego State should win comfortably.
In their 60-56 win over Idaho State, BYU, a 23.5-point favorite, led by five at halftime. But they fell behind by as many as eight in the second half and were staring at a stunning loss until Spencer Johnson hit a go-ahead three in the waning moments.
Alex Barcello led the way in the Cougars’ wins over the Aztecs in 2020 and 2021, and he averaged 16.5 PPG and shot 44.1 from three over his last two seasons in Provo. His departure leaves a major hole for someone to fill, and the struggles against Idaho State–they were 3 of 16 from three and shot just 37.3% from the field overall–underline how tough it will be to do that.
Last season, San Diego State hit the 80-point mark just once in 32 games, an 80-55 win over UNLV on January 24.
While a win over Cal State Fullerton won’t move the needle much, scoring 80 points with Bradley shooting only 2 for 7 and contributing just eight points in 23 minutes is an ominous sign for their opponents this season.
This is a pretty tough matchup for a team trying to figure things out on offense, and while I don’t love double-digit spreads often, this is one spot where I do.
