NC State vs Texas Women’s Elite Eight Prediction & Picks: Whose Final Four Drought Will End in Portland?

Will today be one of the most memorable days in NC State sports history?
In the men’s NCAA Tournament, the eleventh-seeded Wolfpack, the biggest Cinderella story of March Madness, will take on Duke for the program’s first trip to the Final Four since 1983.
In the women’s NCAA Tournament, the Wolfpack will meet Texas (3:00 pm ET, ABC) for the program’s first trip to the Final Four since 1998.
While the men’s team only made the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning the ACC’s automatic bid and is in the Elite Eight for the first time since 1986, NC State’s women’s team (30-6) finished second in the tough ACC behind Virginia Tech and is in the Elite Eight for the second time in three seasons.
The task facing each team is similar, however. The men have to deal with a Duke team that has been dominant defensively and just gave Houston a taste of their own medicine to eliminate the top-seeded Cougars.
The women’s team is also going up against an outstanding defensive team. The Longhorns (33-4), the #1 seed in the Portland 4 regional, have been as stingy as can be in the NCAA Tournament and most of this season.
But the Wolfpack are an outstanding defensive team themselves and are coming off of an impressive double-digit victory over Cameron Brink and #2 seed Stanford. They also own several quality wins this season, and this will be a tough, tough challenge for Vic Schaefer’s Longhorns.

NC State vs Texas Betting Analysis
Statistically, NC State is an even better defensive team than Texas is in multiple categories.
The Longhorns (57.2 PPG) have the edge over the Wolfpack (60.1 PPG) in scoring defense, but NC State has the edge in field goal percentage defense (35.8% to 38.2%) and three-point defense (28.9% to 30.7%).
Notably, they held Colorado to 60 points in an 18-point win on November 25 after the Buffaloes had started the season by averaging 88.0 PPG in a 6-0 start (which included a 92-point performance in their season-opening upset of then-#1 LSU). Only two teams, Oregon State (in a 65-59 win in Boulder) and UCLA (in a 53-45 win in Los Angeles), held Colorado to fewer points this season.
Offensively, Texas (80.5 PPG, 49.3% FG) has the edge over NC State (73.8 PPG, 42.7% FG), but the Wolfpack put up 79 points against Tennessee in the second round and 77 against Stanford in the Sweet Sixteen. And any team that can score 92 on UConn can ball at least a little bit on the offensive end.
As someone who knows quite well what a Vic Schaefer-coached team can do defensively in games like this, my expectation is for the Longhorns to get the job done and give Schaefer his third Final Four trip after two with Mississippi State.
However, I don’t see it being a blowout by any means. NC State is a really good team, and I think the spread here is off by a couple of points. Look for the ‘Horns to win, but the Wolfpack will get the cover in a close contest.
NC State vs Texas Prediction: Texas to win
NC State vs Texas Picks: NC State +6.5 & NC State/Texas under 136
