We are less than a week away from the NCAA Basketball season starting up once again! On Monday, November 4th, nearly all 364 teams will be in action as the 2024-2025 College Hoops season officially kicks off. Now before then, we have to discuss our favorite looks at cutting down the nets in early April.
Will anyone be able to stop UCONN’s three peat?
Lets’ dive in and find out.

Odds to Win NCAA Basketball National Championship
- Duke +900
- UConn +1000
- Houston +1000
- Alabama +1000
- Kansas +1100
- Iowa State +1400
- Gonzaga +1800
- Auburn +2200
- North Carolina +2500
- Arizona +2800
Those are the Top 10 favorites to win the whole thing, but there are some dark horses worth keeping an eye on.

- Kentucky +5000
- Purdue +5000
- Arkansas +5000
- Tennessee +5000
- Creighton +5000
- Florida +5000
- Cincinnati +5000
- Marquette +5500
- Rutgers +5500
- Indiana +6000
After that, teams fall to 66-1 and greater.
Now, what’s interesting to me is how these National Championship odds compare to the preseason AP Top 25 Rankings of the season. Let’s take a look at that list.
Preseason AP Top 25 NCAA Basketball Rankings
- #1 Kansas Jayhawks
- #2 Alabama Crimson Tide
- #3 UConn Huskies
- #4 Houston Cougars
- #5 Iowa State Cyclones
- #6 Gonzaga Bulldogs
- #7 Duke Blue Devils
- #8 Baylor Bears
- #9 North Carolina Tar Heels
- #10 Arizona Wildcats
- #11 Auburn Tigers
- #12 Tennessee Volunteers
- #13 Texas A&M Aggies
- #14 Purdue Boilermakers
- #15 Creighton Blue Jays
- #16 Arkansas Razorbacks
- #17 Indiana Hoosiers
- #18 Marquette Golden Eagles
- #19 Texas Longhorns
- #20 Cincinnati Bearcats
- #21 Florida Gators
- #22 UCLA Bruins
- #23 Kentucky Wildcats
- #24 Ole Miss Rebels
- #25 Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Some of the other teams who received votes include, in order..
- Illinois Fighting Illini
- St. John’s Johnnies
- Xavier Musketeers
- Texas Tech Red Raiders
- Wake Forest Demon Deacons
- Kansas State Wildcats
- Ohio State Buckeyes
- Michigan State Spartans
- Michigan Wolverines
- BYU Cougars
- Oregon Ducks
- Miami Hurricanes
- McNeese State Cowboys
- Providence Friars
- Clemson Tigers
That about rounds out the Top 40 in College Hoops this year, with 15 other teams not listed receiving votes as well.
To put that in perspective, 55 different teams received at least 1 vote to be in the AP Top 25 to start the season, with 5 different teams receiving first place votes. Point being, the deck is absolutely stacked this year.
Top 25 By Conference
- SEC: 9
- Big 12: 6
- Big Ten: 4
- Big East: 3
- ACC: 2
- WCC: 1
Sure, we may have a solidified Top 8-10 teams throughout the season, but there are going to be plenty of fantastic teams hooping this year. And I’m beyond excited to dive into every game with each one of you.
NCAA Basketball National Championship Futures
Now, if someone gave me 4 units to blow on College Hoops futures to win the whole thing. Without knowing the bracket, here’s where I’d sprinkle my coin.
- UConn Huskies (+1000)
- Houston Cougars (+1000)
- Alabama Crimson Tide (+1000)
- Kansas Jayhawks (+1100)
All of these teams have some very key traits in common in my opinion.
- Veteran Leadership
- Depth on the Bench
- Fantastic Coaching
- Tough, Gritty Defense (Besides Alabama)
Defense wins championships, but so does great coaching, a deep bench, and postseason experience. To me, all four of these teams have all four of those qualities, besides Bama’s defense who simply chooses to outscore and outrun opponents.
