For 32 teams who had to deal with the disappointment of missing out on the NCAA Tournament, the 2024 NIT offers the opportunity to end the season on a high note.
As the March Madness action is getting underway this week with the First Four then the first and second rounds, the NIT is also getting underway.
No, it won’t garner the same excitement as an opportunity to play on the biggest stage in college basketball. But the NIT offers the chance to play up to five more games and come home with a trophy.
Last year, North Texas defeated UAB to win the NIT for the first time in school history. The Blazers are in the Big Dance this year after winning the American Athletic Conference’s automatic bid, but the Mean Green are back to defend their title after earning an at-large bid to the NIT.
This year, they and the other teams in the field are vying to make it Indianapolis, as the semifinals and championship game will be held at Hinkle Fieldhouse. That’s the home of the Butler Bulldogs, who won’t have a shot to play for an NIT title on their floor after being eliminated by Minnesota in the first round.
Will North Texas become only the third program to win the NIT in consecutive seasons?
Let’s take a look at the latest 2024 NIT odds, which will be updated throughout the tournament.

2024 NIT Teams
Top Seeds
- Indiana State
- Seton Hall
- Villanova
- Wake Forest
Oklahoma, Seton Hall, Indiana State, and Pittsburgh were the first four teams left out of the NCAA Tournament field. However, the Sooners and Panthers declined NIT invitations.
Other teams that declined invitations include Indiana, Ole Miss, and St. John’s.
Automatic Qualifiers
After previously awarding automatic bids to regular season champions/teams who had the best record in their conference but did not win the conference’s automatic bid, the NIT awarded automatic bids (11 in total) to teams from the Power 6 (ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC).
The top two non-NCAA Tournament teams from each of those conferences (in the NET), minus the Pac-12 (only Utah accepted a bid), received automatic bids to the NIT.
- Wake Forest & Virginia Tech (ACC)
- Cincinnati & UCF (Big 12)
- Providence & Villanova (Big East)
- Iowa & Ohio State (Big Ten)
- Utah (Pac-12)
- Georgia & LSU (SEC)

Who Are the Favorites to Win the 2024 NIT?
Seton Hall Bracket: UNLV (+2800)
With a little more consistency and a few bounces the right way here and there, the Runnin’ Rebels would have been in contention to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013.
The Runnin’ Rebels have six wins over teams that made the NCAA Tournament, as they swept New Mexico, won at Boise State, defeated Colorado State and San Diego State at home, and upset Creighton in non-conference play.
But they also lost to Southern University and Air Force at home, and they lost six games by three or fewer points.
As it is, they are in the postseason for the first time since that season, and I like their chances to make an NIT run.
Look out for freshman guard Dedan Thomas Jr. (14.1 PPG, 5.2 APG, 2.7 RPG), the team’s leader in scoring and assists. Thomas enters the NIT averaging 20.8 PPG in his last six games.
Wake Forest Bracket: Ohio State (+500)
The Buckeyes started 12-2, then dropped nine of their next 11 games, a skid that cost coach Chris Holtmann his job. But six wins in eight games under interim head coach Jake Diebler saw OSU land in the postseason, and it landed Diebler the permanent job.
The Buckeyes, who opened the NIT with an 88-83 win over Cornell, own wins over Alabama and Purdue this season and have a highly talented trio in Bruce Thornton (15.9 PPG, 4.6 APG, 3.6 RPG), Jamison Battle (15.0 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 44.4% 3PT), and Roddy Gayle Jr. (13.6 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 3.1 APG).
Indiana State Bracket: Cincinnati (+900)
The Bearcats won at BYU and Texas Tech in the regular season, but they didn’t play a strong non-conference schedule and didn’t win enough Big 12 games to end up on the right side of the NCAA Tournament bubble.
However, an NIT run could serve as a nice springboard for next season, and I think they will be motivated to go as far as they can in the tournament.
Villanova Bracket: Iowa (+1400)
This was a toss-up between Utah and Iowa, but I’m ultimately leaning towards the Hawkeyes, even though they must visit Salt Lake City in the second round.
Iowa lost too many games and didn’t have enough notable wins to counter the holes in their March Madness resume. But they came to play in their NIT opener, a 91-82 win over Kansas State, and that is encouraging for what could be ahead for the Hawkeyes, who won at Michigan State and Northwestern in the regular season.
