With few opportunities for quality wins remaining on their schedule, Gonzaga faces a must-win matchup tonight at home against San Diego State (9:00 pm ET, ESPN2) in what is the top game on tonight’s college basketball schedule.
Gonzaga has a non-conference showdown at Kentucky on February 10, but other than today’s contest against the Aztecs, the Bulldogs’ only other regular season resume-building opportunities will come in their final two games, provided San Francisco (52nd at KenPom) and Saint Mary’s (49th at KenPom) don’t fall off.
The Bulldogs (9-3) have lost to Purdue, Washington, and UConn, and their wins over Syracuse, UCLA, and USC don’t move the needle at all, given that all three teams aren’t in the March Madness field at present.

San Diego State stands to be in a better position than Gonzaga when it comes to conference play, as Colorado State and Nevada are both firmly in the March Madness field at the moment, and Boise State, New Mexico, and Utah State all could be in the mix as well.
In non-conference play, the Aztecs own neutral-site wins over Saint Mary’s and Washington, but neither of those wins would compare to the impact of a win in Spokane.

San Diego State vs Gonzaga Prediction and Picks
I’m still not quite sure what to make of this Gonzaga team, honestly. While many recent Gonzaga teams have had a floor of the second week of the NCAA Tournament, this one looks like the second week might be the ceiling.
They have largely had their way with inferior opposition, but they went missing offensively at some point in their losses to Purdue, Washington, and UConn, and they were fortunate to escape against UCLA.
That raises a lot of concerns for tonight’s game against San Diego State. After finishing second and fourth in adjusted defensive efficiency the past two seasons, the Aztecs are 20th this season and remain a stiff challenge despite a number of key departures from last year’s team.
But can SDSU shoot well enough to put a scare into the Bulldogs? As a team, the Aztecs are only shooting 33.5% from three. But their three leading scorers–LeDee, Waters, and Parrish–are all shooting 40% or better from outside, and LeDee is shooting 57.2% from the field overall.
I think Gonzaga will find a way to win at home, but San Diego State will keep it close throughout, and if the Aztecs come away with the road win, I won’t be shocked.
