Seton Hall vs Marquette Basketball Prediction & Picks: Will Richmond help the Pirates keep it close?

After returning to his alma mater following his run to the Elite Eight with St. Peter’s last season, things haven’t gone so smoothly for Shaheen Holloway and Seton Hall so far this season.

And after dropping their first two Big East games, the Pirates (7-6, 0-2 Big East) are facing some unfavorable odds tonight as they visit Marquette (9-4, 1-1 Big East) tonight (8:00 pm ET/7:00 pm local time, FS1).

Seton Hall entered Big East play on a three-game win streak, but the Pirates fell at home to Providence by four and at Xavier by three.

They had a chance to tie or go ahead in the final minute in both games, so that counts as two missed opportunities, not two moral victories.

The same can be said for the Golden Eagles about their 103-98 2OT loss to Providence last Tuesday. They led 75-66 with over seven minutes remaining in regulation but managed only three points for the remainder of regulation.

Can Richmond Continue His Good Run for Seton Hall?

There aren’t going to be a lot of warm and fuzzy feelings after being able to close out two games in which you led at some point in the second half, but there is one big bright spot in the Pirates’ losses to Providence and Xavier.

Junior guard Kadary Richmond scored in double figures only twice in his first ten games this season, going for 11 points in a 16-point loss to Iowa and 17 points in a 26-point loss to Kansas.

But he enters tonight following the most productive two-game stretch of his collegiate career. Against Providence, he scored a career-high 28 points, tied a career high–which he had set in the previous game against Drexel–with nine rebounds, and dished out five assists.

Then against Xavier, he filled up the stat sheet again, recording 17 points, four boards, and five dimes.

After scoring 15 or more points just three times in his first 67 collegiate games, Richmond has matched that number in his last five games.

Through 13 games, Seton Hall is averaging just 68.6 PPG, and the Pirates are shooting poorly, connecting on only 43.2 percent of their shots overall from the field and just 29.8 percent of their threes.

Richmond isn’t much of an outside shooter–he is 5 for 13 from outside this season–so he won’t help much in that area shooting wise.

But no one has really stepped up as a go-to scorer, and if he can do that while also dishing out 4+ assists per game, which he has done seven times this season, the Pirates will be in most games.
