Stony Brook vs Charleston Basketball Prediction & Best Bets: Will the Cougars Claim Consecutive CAA Championships?

Last year, the Charleston Cougars had one of the best seasons in school history, winning 31 games and reaching the NCAA Tournament for just the second time since 1999. After losing three of their top five scorers, the Cougars are a win away from returning to the Big Dance, with Stony Brook standing in the way of repeat CAA championships for Charleston.

Last season, the Cougars’ top five scorers all averaged 10+ points per game. Of that group, only Reyne Smith and Ante Brzovic were back for this year’s team.

But Charleston finished two games clear of Drexel atop the CAA standings, and after defeating Monmouth and Towson, the Cougars are 40 minutes from a return trip to the Big Dance.

Can the seventh-seeded Seawolves stop them? Stony Brook’s only NCAA Tournament appearance as a Division I member came in 2016, when they won their first and only America East title under now-Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell, who parted for Piscataway at the end of that season.

If the Seawolves are to win their first CAA title in their second season in the conference, they will have to defeat a former player to do so.

Forward Frankie Policelli was Stony Brook’s leading rebounder (9.4 RPG) and second leading scorer (13.7 PPG) last season, then hit the portal and landed in Charleston, where he is fourth on the team in scoring (9.3 PPG) and second in rebounding (5.2 RPG).

Stony Brook vs Charleston Prediction and Best Bets

Stony Brook vs Charleston Betting Analysis and Prediction

Charleston started the season with three losses in their first four games, but since then the Cougars are 25-3 SU and 16-11-1 ATS.

The lone push on their record this season came in their previous matchup with the Seawolves. On January 6, Charleston overcame a seven-point halftime deficit at Stony Brook in a 93-87 win, which saw them push as a six-point favorite.

While they didn’t cover as a favorite in that matchup, the Cougars are 10-9-1 overall against CAA foes this season, including 5-1 ATS in their last six games.

Last night’s 61-56 win over Towson ended a run of five straight covers for the Cougars, who were a 6.5-point favorite against the fifth-seeded Tigers.

Will Charleston have another close game tonight? If Stony Brook’s season-long spread record is any indication, we will.

Depending on where you look, the Seawolves are either 23-8-2 ATS or 24-8-1 ATS. Only Minnesota, who is 24-7-0 ATS entering Big Ten tournament play, has been better at covering the spread in Division I this season.

That includes a 16-4-1 ATS mark against conference foes and seven straight covers going into tonight’s title tilt with Charleston. As an underdog, Stony Brook is 9-6-1 ATS this season, though their SU mark in those games is a less stellar 4-12.

Also, there has not been a double-digit win in the CAA men’s championship contest since 2015, when Northeastern beat William & Mary 72-61. Last year, Charleston defeated UNC Wilmington 63-58, outscoring the Seahawks in the final six minutes to lock up the automatic bid.

I can’t quite commit to the full game under because things could get wild in the final several minutes, which happened in Sunday’s Furman-Samford game (32 points in the final 2:32) and last night’s Santa Clara-Saint Mary’s game (21 points in the final 2:47).

But neither team has outstanding over numbers in CAA play (10-9-1 for Charleston and 11-10 for Stony Brook), and there have been 51, 64, 59, and 58 points in the first half of the four most recent CAA tournament championship games.
