UConn vs Marquette Basketball Prediction & Picks: Will the Huskies Dominate the Golden Eagles Again?

On their way to winning the Big East regular season title outright for the first time since 1999, the UConn Huskies have racked up numerous impressive wins. The most impressive of their 16 conference wins is no doubt an 81-53 rout of Marquette in last month’s matchup in Hartford.

Will the Huskies repeat that feat in tonight’s rematch in Milwaukee? Or will the Golden Eagles respond to Saturday’s loss at Creighton with a strong showing at Fiserv Forum?

Marquette’s 89-75 loss at Creighton likely put an end to any remaining hopes the Golden Eagles had of sliding into a #1 seed for the NCAA Tournament.

But that doesn’t take any of the shine off of tonight’s rematch with the Huskies, even with the Big East regular season title decided. Two top-10 teams tangling at this point of the NCAA basketball season is a tantalizing prospect, no matter what is or isn’t attached to the matchup.

While not having Tyler Kolek on the floor no doubt affected Marquette’s chances to leave Omaha with a win, their double-digit loss to Creighton was ultimately no surprise (even though yours truly picked them to cover the spread).

The Golden Eagles are only 5-4 SU and 4-5 ATS on the road in Big East play, with double-digit losses at Providence, UConn, and Creighton. At home, however, they are 8-1 SU and ATS, with a still-inexplicable loss to Butler the lone blemish.

Overall, Marquette is 14-1 SU and 11-4 ATS at home this season, and going back to last season, they are 18-1 SU and 14-5 ATS at home in Big East play and 30-2 SU and 20-12 ATS overall at home.

Those are some formidable numbers, but can Marquette win without Kolek? Along with missing the Creighton game, Kolek (oblique) will miss tonight’s game and Saturday’s regular season finale at Xavier.

Kolek is the team’s second leading scorer behind Kam Jones and second leading rebounder behind Oso Ighodaro, and he shoots 40% from three. But his impact and absence are most felt as a distributor, which he does better than anyone else in college basketball. Without him, a team averaging 16.4 assists per game had only seven assists in 30 made baskets at Creighton.

This doesn’t mean that Marquette can’t win without him, but it certainly makes the task much, much more difficult.

That said, even though Kolek’s absence leaves a huge hole, I think home advantage will be a difference-maker here. That was the case in the matchup in Hartford, and it has been the case in many matchups between top teams this season.

Prediction: Marquette to cover and win

UConn has only two conference losses, but both came on the road (at Seton Hall and Creighton), and they have been tested on the road several times.

I don’t think they will take it easy tonight with the Big East regular season title wrapped up, but I don’t think they will put in the same level of performance they did when these teams met a couple of weeks ago.
