Villanova vs Seton Hall Basketball Prediction & Picks: Will the Pirates Punch Their Ticket to the Big Dance?

With the NCAA basketball regular season winding down, Villanova and Seton Hall both appear to be on the right side of the March Madness bubble.

But a lot can change in the next week and a half before Selection Sunday, which makes tonight’s matchup at the Prudential Center in Newark an important one. Who will take the win and all but lock themselves into the Big Dance?

As of ESPN’s latest bracketology update, both teams are in positive positions for now.

But while Villanova is listed as one of the last four byes (along with Colorado State, Florida Atlantic, and TCU), Seton Hall is listed as one of the last four teams in, along with New Mexico, Virginia, and Wake Forest.

A win tonight for the Pirates would not only lock up a top-four finish in the Big East, but it would make it even harder for the committee to leave them out of the field of 68.

Saturday’s season finale is at home against DePaul (3-27, 0-19 Big East), and barring the highly, highly, highly unlikely, the Pirates will enter the Big East Tournament with a 20-11 record, 13 conference wins, and a resume that includes a sweep of St. John’s (another bubble team), a win at Providence (also on the bubble), and home wins over Villanova, UConn, and Marquette.

After winning at Providence last Saturday, the Wildcats are in a strong position to return to the NCAA Tournament after missing out last year. A loss tonight won’t change the opportunity that Saturday’s season finale at the Wells Fargo Center against Creighton (2:30 pm ET, FOX) will bring.

Entering Saturday’s game against the Friars, Villanova had not fared all that well as an underdog or on the road recently.

But timing is everything, and the Wildcats picked a fine time to deliver on the road in a 71-60 win.

For the season, Villanova is 3-6 SU and 5-4 ATS as an underdog, but after winning their first two games as an underdog this season, the Wildcats had gone 0-6 SU and 2-4 ATS in that spot before the win at Providence.

Also, the victory took Villanova to 4-7 SU and 5-6 ATS on the road for the season. Since winning at Creighton and DePaul to open Big East play, the Wildcats had gone just 1-5 SU and 2-4 on the road.

Is a second straight road win on the horizon for Villanova? They throttled Seton Hall 80-54 on February 11, but things are likely to pan out differently tonight.

Both teams are better in their home venues than they are on the road, and while Seton Hall’s last two games were ugly losses at Creighton and UConn, the Pirates should be better tonight as they seek a fourth straight home win.

As much as I love overs, I’m going with the under in this matchup. The under is 7-2 in Villanova’s Big East road games, while it is 4-4 in Seton Hall’s road games.

Richmond (16.2 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 4.8 APG) has scored 20+ points six times in seven home games in Big East play, while he has only two 20-point games in nine road games in conference play.

If he puts up points again tonight, it will bode very, very well for Seton Hall. The Pirates are 7-1 in Big East play and 8-2 overall this season when Richmond has hit the 20-point mark.
