The Louisville Cardinals and Syracuse Orange will kick off their college football seasons with an ACC tilt that could offer one of the closer games of the opening week.
Louisville finished the regular season at 6-6 last season, with an even 4-4 record in ACC play. They made a bowl game, but lost to Air Force in the First Responder Bowl. They finished under .500 for the second straight season.
Syracuse didn’t have the luck in conference play to make it to a bowl game in 2021. They finished the season at 5-7, and they dropped 6 out of 8 against the ACC.
The odds are a lot tighter for this game than most of the other games happening in Week 1. This opens up the door for value in each team, depending on who you side with. Louisville is only favored by 4.5, which is -112 at BetOnline.

Louisville vs. Syracuse Football History
The Cardinals and Orange have played 20 times on the football field. Louisville holds the edge in the series 13-7, and they have won the last 3 meetings between the two. Last season, Louisville put up 41 points for a blowout victory 41-3.
The first meeting between the two came back in 1985, and Syracuse dominated to a 48-0 win. Since 1992, Syracuse has only managed 4 wins in the series.
The last three meetings have taken place in Louisville, KY, and the Cardinals have outscored the Orange 127-37. These two teams now play in the same division within the ACC, so it is a matchup that has happened every year since 2014.
Syracuse leads in all-time wins, but they have also existed as a program for 20+ extra years. For the most part, since the move to the ACC, Louisville has completely outmatched Syracuse, holding them to 10 or less points 4 times.
This has made the Under hit more times than not. However, with the projections for each team so close, it could be time for another Over hit. It hasn’t happened in the series since 2019.
Louisville vs. Syracuse Betting Trends
- Louisville was 6-6 ATS last season
- Louisville had 6 of its 12 games go Over the point total last year
- Syracuse beat the spread 8 times in 12 games last year
- Syracuse had an ATS record of 4-2 as underdogs of 5 points or greater last season
- In 12 Syracuse games last season, 5 of them went Over the point total
Louisville vs. Syracuse Prediction and Picks
Louisville vs. Syracuse Prediction: Syracuse 31, Louisville 28
Louisville vs. Syracuse Best Bets: Syracuse +4.5 (-110 at BetOnline)
The Over/Under is pretty 50/50 between the two teams from last season. In the past four meetings, the Over has hit twice, and the Under has hit twice.
Instead of flipping a coin, focus on the trends from Syracuse. They were great against the spread as 5+ point underdogs last season, posting a 4-2 record against it. Technically, they are not 5 point underdogs tonight, but it is close enough that we have to take a look.
I am not doubting that this will be a close game till the end. Overtime could also be needed, and if you want to make a prop bet on it, you could get a huge payout. The teams making overtime is +1650 at BetOnline. This is opposed to -4500 for them to finish in. regulation.
Take Syracuse at home, as they look to start 1-0 in the conference. They finished with one of the worst conference records last season (2-6), so it can only go up from here.
