College Football Week 11 Schedule and Odds: Is This the Week Georgia Finally Gets Tested in the SEC?

Through another week of upsets and close calls for top teams, top-ranked Georgia rolled yet again to maintain their top spot in this week’s College Football Playoff rankings.

Alabama was on one of those teams that navigated a close call, successfully surviving LSU’s upset bid to stay on course for an seismic SEC championship clash with Georgia. Thanks to the carnage behind them, the Crimson Tide remained in second spot in the CFP rankings, with Oregon now in third and Ohio State in fourth.

Will this be the week that the Bulldogs finally get their turn to have to stave off an upset bid? They travel to Knoxville to take on Tennessee, who is defensively deficient but offensively proficient. It will be the most significant game in Neyland Stadium in some time, so you can be sure that the atmosphere will be off the charts.

Cincinnati has moved into fifth, so the Bearcats certainly still have a chance. But after three straight unconvincing performances in wins over Navy, Tulane, and Tulsa, the Bearcats could do with a blowout win at USF on Friday.

In addition to Georgia and Cincinnati, Michigan (at Penn State), Oklahoma (at Baylor), Notre Dame (at Virginia), and Texas A&M (at Ole Miss) also have tough trips to deal with this week. And we have a huge game in the ACC, as Wake Forest hosts North Carolina State with a chance to put one foot in the ACC title game. Will the Demon Deacons have a hangover from their collapse against North Carolina?

American Athletic Conference

Cincinnati had its biggest scare of the season last Saturday against Tulsa but survived to keep their perfect season and College Football Playoff hopes alive.

Houston remains out of the CFP rankings, but that might change if they handle Temple for their ninth win in a row. The Cougars put up 54 at USF in their win last week, so it will be interesting to see how the conference’s heralded team compares in their trip to Tampa this week.

ACC

Two of the biggest remaining games in the ACC take place this week. After coming back from 18 down to stun Wake Forest last week, North Carolina travels to Pittsburgh to try to spoil the Panthers’ ACC title hopes. The total is currently at 72.5, which feels a little low just as last week’s Wake Forest-North Carolina total feels low.

Speaking of Wake, their loss to the Tar Heels was a hit to their CFP hopes, but as it was a non-conference game, they still carry a perfect ACC record into their Saturday night showdown with North Carolina State.

The Wolfpack’s only blemish in ACC play is against Miami, who is all of a sudden alive in the ACC Coastal Division title race. The Hurricanes have won three straight, including wins over N.C. State and Pittsburgh, heading into their visit to Tallahassee. The stakes aren’t as high as they have been in many other Miami-FSU matchups, but the ‘Noles would love to snuff out Miami’s resurgence just as hope has returned.

The big game of the week in the Big 12 has a little less luster than it would have had Baylor not lost at TCU on Saturday. But while Baylor won’t jump back into the CFP or Big 12 title picture with a win, they can end any chance Oklahoma has of making a jump in the final few weeks of the season.

It might also dampen the continuing Caleb Williams Heisman hype, which has only intensified since I said it should be nipped in the bud after his first start. (For the record, while I love chaos and his emergence as onto the college football scene, and I didn’t and don’t begrudge him being in the conversation, it would be unfair to players who have been excellent over a full season, to get beat out by a guy who will have played a significant role in all of eight games if the Sooners were to win the Big 12 title./end rant)

Ohio State isn’t unbeaten and also isn’t coming off of a big win, as they had to tough out an ugly win at Nebraska. But surely Purdue won’t punt the Buckeyes’ playoff hopes into oblivion for their third win over a top-five team this season. It would simply be “too” much. Too much.

UTSA blasted UTEP at the Sun Bowl to stay perfect, and the Roadrunners were rewarded with a place in this week’s CFP rankings. The Roadrunners, who have scored 44 points or more in each of their last four games, should easily dispose of Southern Miss this week. The Golden Eagles are one of the worst teams in college football. They have been outscored 157-56 in conference play and 272-86 in eight games against FBS opposition this season. Ouch.

The big game of the week in C-USA is Marshall’s matchup with UAB. UAB is second behind UTSA in the West Division, while Marshall is tied with Western Kentucky–who they host on November 27–for first in the East Division.

Last week’s midweek MACtion was frenetic, to put it mildly. In the five games last Tuesday and Wednesday, there were 396 total points scored. Eastern Michigan and Toledo combined for 101, while Kent State and Northern Illinois put up 99 between them, and the other three games featured 56, 68, and 72 points.

How will this week’s six games compare? Tuesday night’s three games had a combined 208 points, and Ohio scored their second straight upset win. Last week, Ohio did it at home, as they knocked off Miami (Ohio), who was favored by seven. Last night, they did it on the road at Eastern Michigan. The Eagles were a six-point favorite but never led in the Bobcats’ 34-26 win.

Thanks to Boise State blowing out Fresno State, first place in the West Division will be up for grabs this week as San Diego State hosts Nevada. The Wolf Pack haven’t made a lot of national noise on the way to a 7-2 mark, but this will be a chance for highly-touted NFL Draft prospect Carson Strong to show his mettle against one of the toughest defenses in college football. He can sling his way into a few dollars and put Nevada in a strong position for a division title.

Speaking of quiet 7-2 teams, Utah State, who sits first in the Mountain Division, has won four in a row heading into their visit to San Jose State. Logan Bonner, who transferred from Arkansas State to join up with former Arkansas State head coach Blake Anderson, has thrown for over 350 yards with four touchdowns in each of the Aggies’ last two games.

Cal’s game against USC was postponed due to COVID issues in Cal’s camp. The Bears were without two dozen players last week against Arizona, which helped the Wildcats pick up their first win since October 5, 2019. Arizona, who was the last winless team in major college football, likely won’t have to wait another two years for their next win. But it’s unlikely to come this weekend against Utah. The Utes are rolling and look set for a title showdown with Oregon next month.

If Purdue is the strangest 6-3 team in college football, Mississippi State is the strangest 5-4 team in college football. The Bulldogs have lost three games by three or fewer points, including last week’s 31-28 loss at Arkansas. Three field goal misses prompted coach Mike Leach to put out an open call for eligible kickers to try out.

As with many things that Mike Leach says, it has been received with amusement by some and annoyance by others. And it has also brought a number of serious inquiries, according to reports. We’ll see what kind of impact special teams will have on their matchup with Auburn, who is regrouping after an ugly offensive performance at Texas A&M.

Can Tennessee make things interesting against Georgia? It will all come down to whether or not Hendon Hooker and the Vols can score against Georgia’s defense, because they aren’t going to win the game with defense. Saturday’s win at Kentucky was Tennessee’s third 40-point performance in SEC play, and they hung with Alabama for over three quarters in Tuscaloosa. So if you’re laughing about Tennessee’s prospects right now, hold that laughter for now at least.

They should get a stiff test next week at Troy, who lost by only a touchdown at Coastal Carolina. This week, it’s Louisiana who has to make the trip to Troy. The Ragin’ Cajuns needed a late touchdown to see off Georgia State last week, their fifth one-score game of the season. Will getting too close to the fire repeatedly finally burn them?

Notre Dame’s game against Virginia is one to avoid for pre-game betting due to the uncertain status of Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong. Armstrong, who is second in the FBS in passing yards and is tied for fifth in touchdown passes, suffered a rib injury in the Cavaliers’ loss to BYU on October 30 and will be a game-time decision. If he can’t play, freshman Jay Woolfolk will start. The Cavaliers have a strong stable of pass-catchers, but they will be much more of a threat if Armstrong can go.
