Ole Miss has had to survive a few challenges on the way to a perfect start and a high ranking. To keep both of those intact for at least another week, they may have come out on top in another tight contest on Saturday afternoon at LSU.
Last week, the Rebels jumped out to an early 21-0 lead over Auburn in Oxford. But despite amassing 448 yards rushing and forcing three turnovers, they weren’t able to put away the Tigers until late in a 48-34 win.
The Tigers that they will face in Baton Rouge had their own shootout last week, outlasting Florida 45-35 in Gainesville thanks to a monster performance by quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Can the Tigers score their biggest win of Brian Kelly’s first season? The Rebels are formidable, but they are also vulnerable.

Against Auburn, the Rebels had three 100-yard rushers, as RBs Quinshon Judkins (25 carries, 139 yards, 2 TD) and Zach Evans (21 carries, 136 yards, TD) and QB Jaxson Dart (14 carries, 115 yards) all hit the century mark.
All in all, Ole Miss tallied 578 total yards and ran almost 90 offensive plays, using just 29:33 in the process. That was actually their second-highest time of possession this season, second to the 30:53 they had the ball against Georgia Tech last month.
As impressive and intimidating as the Rebels are on offense, they certainly aren’t invincible.
They were fortunate to beat Kentucky, who was without RB Chris Rodriguez Jr., and they had a harder time putting away both Tulsa and Auburn.
While Ole Miss got Kentucky at the right time, they may be getting LSU at the wrong time.
After being blown out at home by Tennessee, the Tigers responded in the best possible way by torching Florida for 45 points and 528 yards last Saturday.
Daniels had his best game since his move to Baton Rouge, completing 23 of 32 passes for 349 yards and three touchdowns and adding 44 yards and three rushing touchdowns on 14 attempts.
Along with their big day from their QB, LSU also got 106 yards on 14 carries from Josh Williams, who was held to just 10 yards on seven carries against Tennessee.
Tulsa (262 yards on 43 attempts) and Auburn (301 yards on 48 attempts) both had big days on the ground against Ole Miss, but neither got a particularly great passing performance.
The Tigers have a better QB than anyone the Rebels have faced save for perhaps Will Levis of Kentucky, so if Daniels can stay on target and he and Williams are able to produce on the ground, I really like LSU’s chances.
So do oddsmakers, who have LSU favored by a small margin at home. Death Valley at night is not an enjoyable setting for most opponents, but Death Valley at any time is an especially unpleasant place for Ole Miss to play.
The Rebels have not won in Baton Rouge since a 31-13 win in 2008, and they are 1-9 in their last ten trips there.
Last season, Ole Miss was 6-1 and ranked in the top ten when they went on the road to face a bunch of Tigers that was 5-2 overall and 3-1 in SEC play, and they would fall 31-20 at Auburn.
The scoreline may be different in this matchup against the SEC West’s other Tigers, but the result will be the same.
