The 2022 NCAA college football season has been flying by as we already arrive at Week 6 of the schedule. As usual, there are many exciting matchups to watch this week, including a massive SEC collision between the No. 8 Tennessee Volunteers and No. 25 LSU Tigers.

Tennessee enters the week after spending Week 5 off. The Volunteers were last seen a few weeks ago in their 38-33 win over No. 20 Florida, which saw their running back room combine for 227 yards and three touchdowns on 42 carries.

Meanwhile, LSU has now won four games in a row following its 21-17 victory over Auburn this past weekend. The Tigers offense may have been inconsistent, however, the defense stepped up to save the day, walking out with four takeaways on the night.

This week’s matchup marks the 34th meeting between Tennessee and LSU. When it comes to the 33 previous battles, the Volunteers have emerged as the victors 20 times.

Having said that, Tennessee hasn’t beaten LSU since September 2005. The Tigers have won all five games since that last meeting, outscoring the Vols 133-69 over that stretch. One of those games was even for the 2007 SEC Championship.

Nevertheless, the most recent tilt took place in 2017 and a lot has changed since then. Although LSU has gotten the better of its SEC rival in recent history, I’m siding with Tennessee to win on the road this Saturday.

I think that the Volunteers are the better team because they’ve already been tested this season. They’ve won two close games against top-25 schools (Pittsburgh and Florida) while scoring a combined 132 points in their other two games.

LSU does have a lot to be proud of so far this season, but the Tigers haven’t exactly faced any world-beaters lately. I’m just unsure if Brian Kelly’s squad can handle Tennessee and its 48.5 points per game — second-most in the entire nation.

Meanwhile, LSU averages 28.3 PPG (T-No. 61) and has relied on its defense to get the job done at times. The Volunteer just might have too much firepower for the Tigers to keep pace, plus there’s the fact that Tennessee has a top-25 scoring defense as well.

Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker is leading the fourth-best passing attack in the NCAAF. At the end of the day, LSU hasn’t faced a challenge like that yet and could be in trouble thanks to its average secondary.

I expect a close game between two rivals, but I do expect the Volunteers to get the victory here. They’re more proven and battle-tested than their opponents, which should help them get the win on the road.

Neither SEC team’s defense is amazing this year, so I feel confident enough to back the over on this prop as the rivals fight for footing in the conference. I also recommend taking Tennessee as the 4.5-point moneyline favorite thanks to its offense being that much better than LSU’s unit.
