Texas vs. Kansas State Betting: Will the Longhorns throw a wrench into the Wildcats’ Big 12 title hopes?

An exciting Big 12 title race could have yet another twist tomorrow night if Texas can go into Manhattan and knock off Kansas State, who is riding high after upsetting Oklahoma State last week.

The conference was well-represented in this week’s College Football Playoff rankings, with four members–#7 TCU, #13 Kansas State, #18 Oklahoma State, and #24 Texas–all making the cut.

All four are in the mix for a trip to next month’s conference championship game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with the Horned Frogs (8-0, 5-0) and Wildcats (6-2, 4-1) currently on course to tussle for the title.

But if the Longhorns can leave Manhattan with a win, things will really be blown wide open with several notable matchups still to come over the next few weeks.

Will Howard or Martinez Get the Call for Kansas State?

The big storyline ahead of this game is whether Adrian Martinez or Will Howard will start at quarterback for Kansas State.

Martinez exited the TCU loss early and did not play last week against Oklahoma State, bringing an end to the Heisman Trophy buzz that the Nebraska transfer had generated.

Howard took over against the Horned Frogs and led the Wildcats to a 28-10 lead before getting injured himself in an eventual 38-28 loss, and he drew the start and starred against the Cowboys, going 21 of 37 for 296 yards and four touchdowns in the 48-0 romp.

K-State coach Chris Klieman has yet to determine who will get the start against the Longhorns, but there is a possibility that both could play, if Martinez is able to go.

No firm QB update from Chris Klieman this afternoon.

Adrian Martinez is getting healthier, but Will Howard is playing at a high level. Klieman can see the Wildcats going with either passer. Didn't rule out the possibility of playing both. Decision will come later in the week.

No matter what transpires, Texas will be going up against an experienced, capable quarterback.

Howard, who could still redshirt this season since he has only two games under his belt, played against the ‘Horns in 2020 and 2021, so there is some film and head-to-head experience that Texas can use to prepare that they don’t with Martinez.

While the Longhorns don’t have any sort of quarterback debate to work through at the moment, there is the question of how Quinn Ewers will respond after a rough game at Oklahoma State two weeks ago.

Against the Pokes, Ewers threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns, but he completed just 19 of 49 passes (38.8%) and was picked off three times in the 41-34 loss.

Kansas State’s defense is coming off of a great day against Spencer Sanders, who was 13 of 26 for 147 yards and an interception, was sacked twice, and registered a season-low -9 yards rushing.

Going into their game against Oklahoma State, I was skeptical of how the Wildcats would fare against the Cowboys after falling apart at TCU and with questions about their quarterback situation.

But they had one of the most impressive results and performances of the college football season in their demolition of Okie State, and when home advantage has proven to be so valuable around the country in games like these, it’s hard not to like the Wildcats to get it done again at home, no matter who takes the snaps.
