This Saturday, the Red River Rivalry matchup between Texas and Oklahoma will take place with neither team ranked.
This has not happened since 1998, when Heisman winner Ricky Williams and Texas went on to claim the Big 12 title and win the Cotton Bowl, and it will mark only the sixth time in the history of the rivalry that the matchup will be between two unranked teams.
That doesn’t mean that the game won’t garner plenty of attention, as it still will. But with both teams dealing with notable injuries, being unranked, and already having two losses, the game will not have the same luster as many matchups.
In fact, it isn’t the most interesting game on Saturday’s early slate, with undefeated Tennessee visiting resurgent LSU and TCU and Kansas meeting in a matchup of unexpected–and ranked–unbeatens.
But with both teams needing a win and plenty of talent still on the field, we should still expect plenty of fireworks in this one.

Texas vs. Oklahoma Prediction and Betting Picks
Texas vs. Oklahoma Prediction: Texas to win
Texas vs. Oklahoma Picks: Texas -6.5 (Best Value: -105 at BetOnline) & Texas/Oklahoma over (Best Value: over 65 @ -110 at BetUS)
Both Oklahoma and Texas have an uncertain injury situation at starting quarterback.
Sooners QB Dillon Gabriel was knocked out of Saturday’s loss to TCU early in the second quarter after taking a hard hit from Jamoi Hodge, who was ejected from the game, and his status for Saturday’s matchup is up in the air for now.
(Warning: Posting the hit for context. Viewer discretion is very much advised here.)
Davis Beville took over for Gabriel and went 7 of 16 for 50 yards, and he would get the nod if Gabriel can’t go against Texas. Given how wild Red River Rivalry games can be, you can’t completely write off the Sooners if Gabriel is out, but they would not be in a positive position.
Even with a healthy Gabriel, Oklahoma couldn’t be facing Texas at a worse time.
The Sooners coasted against UTEP, Kent State, and a Nebraska team that had just fired its coach. But now that they have entered Big 12 play, it appears that their defense is unable to stop anyone, especially on the ground.
A week after allowing 275 rushing yards and 509 yards total at home in a 41-34 loss to Adrian Martinez and Kansas State, the Sooners allowed 361 rushing yards and 668 total in their 55-24 loss to TCU.
When they are facing Bijan Robinson on Saturday, that spells trouble, whether Quinn Ewers returns to action or Hudson Card makes his fourth straight start at QB.
Game-by-Game Numbers for Bijan Robinson (2022 Season)
- UL Monroe: 10 carries, 71 yards, TD; three catches, 40 yards, TD
- Alabama: 21 carries, 57 yards, TD; three catches, 73 yards
- UTSA: 20 carries, 183 yards, 3 TD; one catch, 19 yards
- Texas Tech: 16 carries, 103 yards, 2 TD; one catch, 22 yards
- West Virginia: 21 carries, 101 yards, TD; two catches, 34 yards
The only time Robinson has had more than 21 carries in a game is last year’s TCU game, in which he had 35 carries for a career-high 216 yards and two scores in a 32-27 win.
No matter the starting quarterback, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian would be wise to try to get Robinson 25-30 touches against Oklahoma’s flailing defense.
Ewers is obviously the guy for the present and the future for Texas, but the Longhorns have a lot more reason for confidence in their situation than the Sooners do for theirs.
That is thanks to the experience advantage for Card, who was 21 of 27 for 303 yards and three scores in Saturday’s 38-20 win over West Virginia.
Texas certainly doesn’t have a dominant defense, even if they did hold Alabama to only 20 points. But they certainly seem to be more competent than Oklahoma’s defense at the moment.
Texas has beaten Oklahoma only once in the last seven meetings, but they are the more stable of the two teams at the moment on both sides of the ball.
Even if Gabriel does happen to take the field on Saturday, the Longhorns will be good value to win by at least a touchdown.
