The 2022 NCAA college football season has been flying by as we already arrive at Week 6 of the schedule. While most of the action goes down on Saturday, there are some interesting bouts taking place on Friday, including an MWC duel between the UNLV Rebels and San Jose State Spartans.
UNLV has looked strong, winning four straight games ahead of this tilt. The Rebels are coming off a 31-20 win against New Mexico in a game where UNLV trailed 14-0 after the first quarter, only to outscore the Lobos 31-6 over the final three quarters.
San Jose State has had a terrific start to the campaign, winning three of four games thus far. Momentum is strong after the Spartans’ 33-16 win over Wyoming last week, which saw quarterback Chevan Cordeiro throw for 314 yards and a touchdown with an interception.
Here are BetOnline Sportsbook’s latest UNLV vs San Jose State betting odds, as well as a prediction and best bet for the upcoming NCAAF tilt.

UNLV Rebels vs San Jose State Spartans Prediction and Picks
UNLV vs San Jose State Prediction: San Jose State 31, UNLV 23
UNLV vs San Jose State: San Jose State -6.5 (Best Value: -110 at BetOnline) & Over 51.5 Points (Best Value: -115 at BetOnline)
There appear to be three guarantees in life: death, taxes and San Jose State getting the better of UNLV.
The Rebels and Spartans have squared off 26 times over the years, resulting in 18 victories for the latter. San Jose State has won 10 of the 12 head-to-head meetings since 1995, including last year’s tilt by a score of 27-20.
While UNLV has the better record on paper, even generating 34.3 points per game (T-No. 28), Marcus Arroyo’s team hasn't exactly faced the toughest competition. In fact, the Rebels’ four victories have come against teams who combine for a 6-15 record as of Week 6.
San Jose State’s opponents may not have been great either (6-9), but they were a better group of teams.
I do think that the Spartans’ defense will be a major factor Friday night. The unit is only giving up 15.3 points (No. 12) and 277.3 total yards (No. 10) per game. They might not take the ball away often, but they certainly know how to stop the opposition dead in its tracks.
Another thing that hurts UNLV is that the program hasn’t looked that special on the road this season. The Rebels lost to California in their second game of the season and while they did beat Utah State in enemy territory, the Aggies have been a mess throughout the season.
Meanwhile, San Jose State has been solid at home (2-0) and the hometown crowd should give the Spartans a serious boost. It also helps that San Jose State is 10-2-1 in 13 all-time home games against UNLV, having not lost to its rivals at home since 1993.
The Rebels will also be without wide receivers Kyle Williams and Jeff Weimer, leaving Ricky White as the only credible pass-catching option. While UNLV will likely focus on running the ball, San Jose State has a top-20 run defense at home when it comes to yards per carry (2.6).
This is a rivalry game that should be close at times, but I expect San Jose State to walk out with the victory. The defense is for real and should give UNLV a headache, leading to a Spartans victory.
San Jose State is 7-2-1 ATS in its last 10 meetings with UNLV, which is why I’m comfortable enough to back the Spartans on the 6.5-point spread.
I’m also backing the over on the 51.5-point total. Even though that seems like a lot, the last seven UNLV vs San Jose State matchups have seen an average total of 60.7 points, hitting over 51.5 in five of those meetings.
