See Picks & Statistics For The GameThe ACC is giving us some Friday Night Lights this week down in Miami, as the Hurricanes take on the Virginia Tech Hokies. This will be both teams first conference matchup of the season, but one team is having much more success so far. The Hurricanes are off to a roaring start with Cam Ward leading the offense. Miami is 4-0 for the 2nd straight season, they are 2nd in the nation in scoring putting up over 50 points per game, and are generating over 600 yards of total offense per contest. They also haven’t played a close game yet this year.
Hurricanes Margin of Victory
- @ Florida: 24 points
- vs Florida A&M: 45 points
- vs Ball State: 62 points
- @ South Florida: 35 points
They are beating teams by an average of 4 TDs, and I’m not sure the Hokies pose much of a threat.
While there was some “Dark Horse in the ACC” hype surrounding Virginia Tech to start the season, they have not performed as expected. The Hokies lost their opener @ Vanderbilt by a touchdown to start the season, following the loss up with 2 wins against Marshall and Old Dominion. Last weekend, Va Tech traveled to Rutgers, and lost to the Scarlet Knights, 26-23, but the score was a lot closer than the game itself. The Hokies scored 16 points in the 4th quarter to tie the game, only to lose on a field goal with 2 minutes on the clock.
Will they pull up their bootstraps and take it to Miami? Or will the Hurricanes roll to another easy victory?

Hokies Face Hurricanes in Sunshine State
Despite the preseason hype, Virginia Tech will now just be playing to make a bowl game this season. They would’ve expected to be undefeated and possibly ranked at this point, but thanks to 2 losses, they are well out of contention. This week, they have a very tough task taking on the Miami Hurricanes defense on the road, who have looked absolutely incredible so far this season. Miami’s defense has allowed just 41 total points this year, giving up just over 10 per contest.
Kyron Drones will need to figure out ways to move the ball in chunk plays, as the Hokies will need to keep up with the Hurricanes’ offesne. Drones is a dual threat QB, and has 200 rushing yards and 2 TDs on the ground this season, but he is not the passer Virginia Tech will need. He’s completing less than 60% of his passes, and has 4 TDs to his 3 INTs so far this season. The Hurricanes’ defense is allowing less than 70 yards per game on the ground, and assuming they lead most of this game, Virginia Tech will be forced to throw the ball.
This will take Drones out of his comfort zone, leading to some mistakes and probably one or two turnovers. I trust the Hurricanes to take advantage of this takeaways, turning them into points. Cam Ward and the Miami offense is firing on all cylinders, doing whatever they please to opposing defenses. I doubt this Hokies’ defense is able to slow them down at all. While I lean with Miami to win and cover, I will be backing their defense in this contest.

Here we have a juggernaut in the ACC, and a mid-tier opponent. The Juggernaut is at home, playing incredible football, and are ready to put a national audience on notice. Respectfully, I don’t think Virginia Tech stands a chance. This one could get very ugly, in my opinion, and I do not expect Cristobal to call off the dogs on either side of the ball.
The Hurricanes will get an extra day of rest before heading out to the West Coast to face California next week. Despite the travel, they shouldn’t be looking ahead at all. The Hurricanes will be fully focused on shutting down the Hokies and embarrassing a conference opponent at home. They will look to send a message to the rest of the ACC, specifically Clemson and Louisville, that they are the team to beat in this league. The Miami Hurricanes are back, and they want the world to know it.
I look forward to seeing their defense come alive and play like animals against Virginia Tech on Friday Night.
