Washington vs USC Prediction & Best Bets: Expect Penix, Williams to Conjure Up a Coliseum Classic

Barring the very, very, very unlikely, Caleb Williams will fall short in his bid to become only the second two-time Heisman Trophy winner, and the USC Trojans will fall short of fulfilling lofty preseason expectations. But they have a chance to play spoiler in a big way with Michael Penix Jr. and undefeated Washington visiting the Coliseum (7:30 pm ET, ABC).
With two losses to their name, the #20 Trojans (7-2, 5-1 Pac-12) are out of the national championship picture, and Williams is no longer among the Heisman favorites.
But their Pac-12 title hopes are still very much alive with home games against Washington and UCLA sandwiched around next weekend’s trip to Oregon.

For the Huskies (8-0, 5-0 Pac-12), their visit to Los Angeles is the start of a make-or-break three weeks. After this game, they will host Utah and visit Oregon State, two current top-20 teams.
If UW can remain unblemished through this stretch, they will be on the cusp of a potential College Football Playoff berth, and Penix will have at least one hand on the Heisman. Ahead of the first hurdle, the Huskies are favored by a field goal, with plenty of points expected for the contest.

Will Washington Punish USC’s Porous Defense?
If USC had even a slightly respectable defense, the spread for this matchup would be vastly different.
Alas, their defense seems to find new lows each week, even in victory.
Last week, they forced four turnovers against Cal but allowed 527 total yards. However, they did make a play when it was most needed, denying the Bears’ late two-point conversion attempt to preserve the lead in a 50-49 win.
It was overall yet another poor performance on that side of the ball for USC. The previous week, they allowed 34 points and 482 yards in a last-second loss to Utah, who have not exactly been explosive on offense with Cam Rising sidelined this season.
So, they couldn’t stop the Utes, who are dead last in the Pac-12 in total offense.
And they couldn’t stop the Bears, who had been held to 254 total yards against Utah in their previous game.
Is there any way at all that USC stops Washington enough to make a discernible impact on the outcome? It seems highly unlikely to occur.
After all, this matchup pits one of the most prolific (368.1 passing yards per game), efficient (69% completion percentage, 10.0 yards per attempt, 24 TD, 6 INT), and elusive (sacked only five times in eight games) quarterbacks in college football.
There’s only one word I can think of when taking that information in and mulling it over.
Yikes.
Washington vs USC Prediction and Best Bets
Prediction: Washington to win
Best Bets: Washington -3 (-105 at Bovada) & Washington/USC over 77.5 (-110 at Bovada)
USC obviously has the offense to keep up with Washington. Against Cal, Williams threw for 369 yards despite completing only 57.5% of his 40 pass attempts, and running back Mar’Shawn Lloyd tallied 115 yards rushing, 72 yards receiving, and two touchdowns.
But Washington’s defense has at least shown some ability to make stops, and I think their ability to muster up a stop or two more than USC will make all of the difference.
