We’ve already arrived at Week 4 of the 2022 NCAA college football season. One of the upcoming matchups that a lot of fans are looking forward to is a West Virginia vs Virginia Tech clash that goes down on Thursday, Sept. 22.
West Virginia achieved its first victory of the season last week with a massive 65-7 victory against Towson. The Mountaineers offense was led by a pair of running backs as Tony Mathis Jr. turned 17 carries into 104 yards and two touchdowns while CJ Donaldson had a 9-101-3 stat line of his own.
Though it wasn’t as lopsided, Virginia Tech also picked up a win over the weekend. The Hokies defeated the winless Wofford Terriers, 27-7. VT quarterback Grant Wells led the charge, completing 26-of-35 passes for 314 yards and a pair of TDs.
Here are BetMGM’s latest Mountaineers vs Hokies betting odds, as well as a prediction and best bet for the upcoming NCAAF tilt.

West Virginia vs Virginia Tech Prediction and Picks
West Virginia vs Virginia Tech Prediction: West Virginia 28, Virginia Tech 24
Virginia vs Virginia Tech: West Virginia -3 (Best Value: -105 at BetMGM) & Under 53.5 Points (Best Value: -110 at BetMGM)
West Virginia and Virginia Tech have had a tense college football rivalry dating back to their first meeting in 1912. Things have gone back and forth in the 53 clashes since then, however, it’s the Mountaineers that lead the series with a 29-23-1 record.
You don’t have to go too far back to find the last game between the rivals. West Virginia and Virginia Tech last faced off in Week 3 of the 2021 NCAAF season, leading to a 27-21 victory for the Mountaineers.
Having said that, West Virginia’s victory last fall snapped a three-game losing streak against its rival. Virginia Tech has actually won 10 of its last 14 games against the Mountaineers, however, the majority of those victories came in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Though Virginia Tech has one more win this season, I’m siding with West Virginia here. After all, the Mountaineers’ two losses came against a pair of solid schools in Kentucky (an overtime loss) and Pittsburgh (a top-25 program), so there isn’t much to be ashamed about.
Besides, the Mountaineers’ offense has looked great this season, averaging 36.5 points per game — No. 32 in the nation. On the other hand, the Hokies are only scoring 22.0 PPG (T-No. 87) and while they boast a top-30 scoring defense, none of their three previous opponents really compare to West Virginia.
It was the Mountaineers’ run game that won them last year’s meeting with the Hokies and it could be the same again. West Virginia averages 168 rushing yards per game in 2022 and as long as that trend continues, Neal Brown’s squad shouldn’t have any problems running out the clock.
Fans should expect to see another close West Virginia vs Virginia Tech matchup considering how four of the rivalries’ last six games have been decided by one possession.
Having said that, I’m taking West Virginia as the 3-point favorite on the spread. It also helps that Virginia Tech is only 4-10 ATS in its last 14 outings.
I’m also taking the total finishing under 53.5 points due to the last seven matchups between the Mountaineers and Hokies having an average total of 42.1 points. In fact, they’ve finished with below 53.5 points in six of those meetings.
