Giants vs. Titans Odds, Prediction & Best Bets for Week 1

After winning a second straight AFC South title last season, the Tennessee Titans will get their quest for a third straight division crown underway at home against the New York Giants on Sunday.

The Titans weathered a midseason injury to Derrick Henry to win the AFC South and claim the top seed in the AFC. But they were suffered a heartbreaking last-second loss in the divisional round to the Cincinnati Bengals, who went on to reach Super Bowl LVI.

The Titans have made some changes on both sides of the ball, but offensive cornerstone Henry is back to 100 percent and ready to make a run at a second 2,000-yard season in three years.

The Giants, meanwhile, are looking to show signs of improvement under new coach Brian Daboll, who took the helm after Joe Judge was fired after two poor seasons.

Daboll played a big role in the development of QB Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills’ rise to the upper echelon of the NFL. Sunday’s game in Nashville will be a chance to see what kind of strides, if any, the likes of Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley have made or could make under the new regime.

Will Jones and Barkley Step Up for the Giants?

It won’t take much for the Giants to be better than they were last year on offense or defense.

On offense, they finished 31st in yards per game (287.3 YPG) and last in points scored per game (15.2 PPG). On defense, they finished 21st in yards allowed per game (354.8 YPG) and 23rd in points allowed per game (24.5 PPG).

It’s a big year for QB Daniel Jones, who has one more chance to prove that he could be the guy.

The franchise could have the chance to pick Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Will Levis, Anthony Richardson, or Tyler Van Dyke in the 2023 NFL Draft, so Jones might be gone after this year either way. But the better he performs this season could at worst enhance his options for a fresh start next year.

It’s also a big year for Barkley, who has played in only 15 games over the last two seasons and averaged just 3.8 yards per carry and 6.4 yards per catch last season.

Will Tannehill’s Troubles Resurface in 2022?

For the Titans, the big cloud is at quarterback, as Ryan Tannehill is coming off of a rough year that ended with him throwing three interceptions in their loss to the Bengals, including one in the final minute that set up Cincinnati’s game-winning field goal.

He threw more interceptions in 2021 (14) than he had in the previous two seasons combined (13) and averaged just seven yards per attempt.

Henry will be the focal point of the offense once again, and understandably so. But the passing game needs to be better for the Titans to be a bigger threat in an absolutely stacked AFC.

He has somewhat of a clean slate, as the receiving corps now includes experienced tight end Austin Hooper, former Rams receiver Robert Woods, and Treylon Burks, the 18th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Gone are Julio Jones, who didn’t quite work out in his lone season in Nashville, and A.J. Brown, who was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for the pick that was used to draft Burks.

How well Tannehill links up with his new top targets will play a key role in how much noise the Titans will be capable of making come January and if Tennessee is doing some QB shopping next offseason.

Daboll might well do wonders with the Giants, but this is a game that the Titans should not lose if they have any real aspirations for success this season. Not only are they a better team, but they also have a tough schedule, and losing games they should win will decrease their margin for error going forward.

Fortunately, they will not trip themselves up on Sunday. Look for Henry to start his year with a big game and for the home team to cover and win.
