See Picks & Statistics For The GameThere may not be a Thursday Night Football matchup this NFL season that will match last week’s Indianapolis Colts vs. Denver Broncos showdown in putridity, but it will be a surprise to no one if the Week 6 TNF tilt between the Washington Commanders and Chicago Bears comes close.
After opening the season with a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Commanders have dropped four straight games.
Sunday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans might have been the worst of the bunch, as Washington had 1st and goal from the two in the final seconds before Carson Wentz found David Long Jr. near the goal line. Unfortunately for Wentz and Washington, Long is a linebacker for the Titans.
The Bears, meanwhile, are back home after back-to-back one-possession road losses to the Giants and Vikings. Now, there’s certainly no shame in losing to two 4-1 teams, but they could have won one or both games with a few more plays on both sides of the ball.
But while the building Bears can perhaps find some positives in their tough losses, the same can’t be said for the Commanders, and a loss in the Windy City will only turn up the heat on both Wentz and coach Ron Rivera.

Was Sunday’s loss the bottom for Washington? There were actually a lot of positives, until Wentz’s costly pick.
After playing poorly against the Eagles and Cowboys, Wentz threw for a season-high 359 yards and completed almost 66 percent of his passes against the Titans.
And Washington’s defense sacked Ryan Tannehill five times and limited Derrick Henry to just 3.6 yards per carry.
But after such a demoralizing loss, can the Commanders pick themselves up for the quick turnaround? There’s not a lot of reason to feel confident that they will do so.
And Rivera using QB as the reason why Washington is behind three 4-1 teams in the NFC East is not going to help generate any confidence, even if you consider the context he was supposedly trying to use here:
After all, the Giants have a new coach, the Cowboys lost their starter in the opener, and both Daniel Jones and Jalen Hurts entered this season with some serious questions hanging over them.
Fields and the Bears are certainly still trying to learn how to win, but there is something to build on and feel confident about, both in terms of his play and in terms of increased trust and belief week to week.
There’s a lot to be said for that, especially when the other team is headed in the wrong direction. I like the Bears’ efforts to pay off this week after a couple of near misses against the Giants and Vikings.
The home team has won three of four Thursday Night Football games so far this season–it should be four for four, but I digress–and that success will continue in Week 6.
