Football fans can breathe a sigh of relief now that the 2023 NFL season is here. One of the biggest matchups of the week takes place Sunday afternoon when the Philadelphia Eagles pay a visit to Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots.

Eagles vs Patriots Matchup Preview
The Eagles and Patriots begin a new schedule after undergoing vastly different 2022 campaigns.
The Eagles played like one of the best teams in the NFL last year, boasting a plus-29.1 average scoring margin (No. 2). They were elite on both sides of the ball and rode their talent-rich lineup all the way to Super Bowl LVII. Even though they wound up losing to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Birds solidified themselves as championship contenders.
Although the Eagles lost some key players during the offseason, most of the 2022 roster is returning. There’s also some fresh blood in the lineup, including the dynamic rookie trio of Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, and Kelee Ringo, who all played at Georgia together.
Meanwhile, QB Jalen Hurts continues to lead the charge on offense after generating over 4,400 yards and 35 touchdowns between the ground and air last year. The 25-year-old gunslinger currently has the second-best 2023 NFL MVP odds (+700) on BetOnline.
Meanwhile, the Patriots left much to be desired by going 8-9 in 2022 — their second losing record in the last three seasons.
The issue with the Patriots is that their offense was just average last year, averaging 21.4 PPG. It didn’t help that key offensive players like Jones, Damien Harris, and
Ty Montgomery reached missed significant periods.
Having said that, New England looks poised for better results this fall. The roster is healthier and it’s going to be interesting to see what Jones is capable of now that he has new weapons like JuJu Smith-Schuster, Ezekiel Elliott, and Mike Gesicki to work with.
The Patriots defense also must prove that it can be as strong as it was last year (20.4 PPG, No. 11). The main issue to overcome is the retirement of long-time safety Devin McCourty, who racked up three All-Pro and two Pro-Bowl appearances since 2010.
On top of that, although they’re the underdogs, the Patriots have won five of their last seven meetings against the Eagles. In other words, it’s best if Philadelphia doesn’t underestimate its opponent too much this weekend.

Even though the Patriots will put up a fight, this game is the Eagles’ to lose. Philadelphia is on a mission after coming up short in the Super Bowl and has more than enough talent to put the league on notice by picking up the win at Gillette Stadium.
In addition to the Eagles covering the spread, I like the over on the 44.5-point total. Philly already has one of the best offenses in the NFL while New England’s should be better than it was last year.
Throw in the fact that four of the last five Eagles vs Patriots games went over 44.5 points and it’s easy to like the over again on Sunday.
