The NFC Championship is officially upon us as Brock Purdy and Jared Goff have punched their teams’ tickets to the conference finals!
Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers host Goff and the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
The number 1 overall seed Niners have looked fairly dominant all year long. Despite a few hiccups, their 12-5 record and 5-3 at home speaks for itself. However, Detroit is this year’s team of destiny.
After knocking off Patrick Mahomes and the Super Bowl Champion Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 1, the Lions put themselves on the map as a force to be reckoned with.
The Lions jumped out to an 8-2 record after 10 games, with losses at Baltimore and against Seattle. They won the NFC North by 3 full games, and after knocking off Matthew Stafford and the Rams, and Baker Mayfield and the Bucs, the question remains:
Could this be Jared Goff’s year?
Or will the Niners advance to the Super Bowl, like we all thought they would after their 5-0 start to the season?

Will Injuries Come into Play?
Everyone is talking about Deebo Samuel and his injury. He went down against Green Bay, and would not return, playing in very minimal snaps. He caught both of his targets for 24 yards before getting injured, but his status will be heavily monitored this week.
As of Monday Morning, Samuel is listed as questionable with a shoulder injury, and he is “50-50” in regards to suiting up for Sunday’s game against the Lions.
Samuel contributed over 1,000 all purpose yards and 12 TDs for this Niners offense this season, so losing a weapon like him definitely hinders their firepower.
They were able to win the game against Green Bay, but it took a missed field goal and a terrible Jordan Love interception to get the job done.
If the Niners do not have Deebo on Sunday, this could be anyone’s game.
Detroit does not have any major injuries like the Niners face with Deebo, however starting Left Guard, Jonah Jackson is listed as questionable and “does not look good” for Sunday according to Head Coach Dan Campbell.
Missing an offensive lineman is never great, especially against this Niners Front 7.
The Lions will certainly rely on both Running Backs to get involved to move to ball against this San Francisco defense.
Can Goff Move the Ball Against the Niners?
Detroit scores more on the road, plain and simple. They average 27 points per game already, ranking Top 5 in the league. On the road, they are still Top 5, scoring closer to 30 points per game.
Now, this will be their first road playoff game this year, having beaten both opponent’s at Ford Field so far. Plus, they have to take on the big bad Niners of San Francisco.
The Niners give up over 17 points per game, but this ranks 3rd in the NFL. At home, that number does jump to over 19, keeping them in the top half of the league.
Let’s talk some history.
NFC Championship History
The San Francisco Niners have found themselves playing in their third straight NFC Championship, and their 4th in the last 5 years. Now, they have lost two straight, so it’s clear they should be going into this game with some extra motivation, trying to get over the hump and reach the Super Bowl for the first time since 2020.
Point being, the Niners have been here before and have experience.
The Lions do not.
The Detroit Lions have played in one NFC Championship game, back in 1992 where they lost to the Redskins 41-10. Other than that, nothing.
The Lions are America’s Team of Destiny this year, and to be honest, I don’t think the momentum can carry them any further.
This Niners team is built different, and their defense might be the best to ever step on a football field.
However, this is a Conference Championship. Having a team be favored by an entire touchdown is far too many points in my opinion.

Look, I’ll back America’s team in this game. Everyone is rooting on Brock Purdy’s downfall, and to be honest, I’ll join them this weekend.
If Deebo doesn’t play, or is even a little banged up, Purdy loses one of his best weapons. Yes, he will still have CMC, Aiyuk and Kittle, but the versatility of Samuel is hard to scheme against.
I have a feeling we won’t truly know Deebo’s injury status until later in the week, however I’m willing to bet he won’t be 100%. He avoided a fracture, but who knows what that really means. Not me.
Regardless, I have faith in this Lions team, and I’m willing to bet on them to cover a Touchdown in this Conference Championship. I do like the Niners outright, but by closer to a Field Goal.
The backdoor could be left wide open. Give me the Niners 27-21.
