See Picks & Statistics For The GameAs December begins, the Miami Dolphins look like a potential contender, and Tua Tagovailoa looks look a potential NFL MVP.
But whether or not those things will still be the case when the regular season ends next month will be shaped significantly by their travels over the next three weeks, starting with their Week 13 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers.
Going into Sunday’s game at Levi’s Stadium, the Dolphins have won five straight games, and they currently have the tiebreaker advantage over the Buffalo Bills atop the AFC East.
With the next three weeks taking them to Levi’s Stadium, SoFi Stadium (vs the Los Angeles Chargers), and Highmark Stadium (vs the Bills), we’re about to see what Tua and this Miami team is really made of.
For San Francisco, this is the first of four straight games against teams who are currently in the playoff hunt, with games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Seattle Seahawks, and Washington Commanders following Miami’s visit.
Which division leader will come out on top in Sunday’s battle in the Bay Area? Read on for our Dolphins vs 49ers prediction, as well as our betting picks for the game.

Will San Francisco’s Dominant Defense Slow Down Miami’s Explosive Offense?
Last Sunday, the Dolphins scored 30+ points for the fourth straight game as they defeated the Houston Texans 30-15.
All of their damage was done in the first half, as they went to the locker room with a 30-0 lead. That was both good and bad for my picks for the game, as Miami easily covered the first half spread but missed on the over for their team total by not managing a single score in the second half.
That was in part due to Tua not finishing out the game with the game well in hand. But while he was in there, he had another fine game, throwing for 299 yards and a touchdown.
Since returning from his concussion, Tua has thrown for 1,529 yards and 11 touchdowns, and he hasn’t thrown a single interception. In that stretch, he has completed 69.8 percent of his passes and averaged 9.1 yards per pass.
He and the Dolphins are set for one of their toughest tests of the season, with the 49ers playing at an elite level defensively.
Since getting torched by Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in a 44-23 loss in Week 7, the Niners have allowed just 40 points in four games.
Last Four Games for the San Francisco 49ers
- Los Angeles Rams (away): won 31-14
- Los Angeles Chargers (home): won 22-16
- Arizona Cardinals (Mexico City): won 38-10
- New Orleans Saints (home): won 13-0
In Week 12, they blanked New Orleans 13-0, handing the Saints their first shutout since 2001. They allowed just 260 yards and forced two turnovers, and they limited the Saints to just 2.9 yards per carry.
In their loss to the Chiefs, San Francisco allowed a season-high 529 yards. In their other ten games, they haven’t allowed more than 314 yards.
Thus far, the Chiefs and the Atlanta Falcons (in a 28-14 win in Week 6) are the only two teams that have scored 20+ points against San Francisco this season.
Can the Dolphins be the third? In the eight games that Tua has started and finished this season–all wins–the Dolphins have scored 20+ points in all but one game, the 16-10 Week 7 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the game that marked Tua’s return to action after missing two full games and part of a third.
Miami Dolphins vs San Francisco 49ers Prediction and Picks
Dolphins vs 49ers Prediction: 49ers to win
Dolphins vs 49ers Picks: 49ers team total over (Best Value: over 24.5 @ -114 at BetUS) & Dolphins/49ers total over (Best Value: over 46.5 @ -110 at all of our recommended sportsbooks)
I’m a big believer in what Miami has going–and would be an even bigger believer if their ground game was productive on a more frequent and consistent basis–and feel that there is a lot of success to come for Tua and Mike McDaniel.
But as much as I love to see high-scoring offenses run the show, I’m giving San Francisco and their defense the nod with my Dolphins vs 49ers prediction.
True enough, I still feel that there will be plenty of points scored. But a stop or three will have to be made to turn or win the game, and when push comes to shove, I trust the Niners more to make big defensive plays and stops in key moments.
