Preseason games are in full swing, and you can almost smell the wings being cooked up at your favorite dive bar that is gearing up for NFL kickoff! We’ve covered the top three skill positions here at Betting News in our NFL Fantasy value picks series. That means only one more position to cover, the elusive tight ends. This is a position that for years only had about three viable options for fantasy, and then there was everyone else. However, over the past couple seasons multiple tight ends have exploded on the scene giving more value up and down the draft. So let’s dig in and find some gems!
This is an ongoing series to highlight players who REEK of value in NFL fantasy drafts. We aren’t talking about McCaffrey with the 1st overall pick, but instead we are going to be finding gems. Each article will feature a position within a range of draft rounds (we will always skip the 1st round). We will assume that these picks are for 12-team leagues with .5 PPR and will not be discussing in terms of Superflex. On top of that I’ll highlight a futures bet that corresponds with each player, all of whose odds can be found on BETONLINE.
So without further ado, let’s kick it off with NFL fantasy football 2024 early round value picks: the tight ends. It’s mock draft season baby!!!
1. Tight End Value Rounds 2-5: Dalton Kincaid
Last year the Buffalo Bills drafted tight end Dalton Kincaid in the 1st round of the NFL draft. Their general manager exclaimed that he couldn’t wait to make every team that passed on Kincaid pay for doing so. Clearly the Bills have big plans for Kincaid, and near the end of his rookie season and in the playoffs you could see him blossoming as a player.
Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis left the Bills this offseason, leaving Josh Allen without two of his top weapons. However, the Bills don’t seem to be concerned, and you have to think Kincaid is a big reason for this. Currently you can draft Kincaid in the 5th round in NFL fantasy drafts, which seems like fantastic value for a tight end who may rival Travis Kelce in targets this season.
Known for his reliable hands, route-running, and ability to create mismatches against defenders, Kincaid has the potential to be a top target in his team’s offense, particularly in the red zone. After a slow start, Kincaid ended last season with 673 receiving yards from 91 targets and only managed to grab two touch downs. This still ranked him at the 12th best tight end, and you know that usage should skyrocket this season. From week 7 and on Kincaid averaged 5.7 receptions and 6 of those 10 weeks he had over 50 receiving yards.
Again, the numbers are not eye popping on paper, but tight ends historically take a season or two to find their footings in the NFL. And without Diggs and Davis in the receiving room, Kincaid has a very good chance of being the top quaterback in fantasy’s primary target. Is this the second coming of Kelce? We will find out. But Kincaid should be a top NFL fantasy option for tight ends.
Dalton Kincaid o77.5 receptions -112 on BetOnline:
To be honest, I love all three of Kincaid’s futures props, but his receptions seems the safest. He had 73 receiptions last season with Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis in the line up. He also played less snaps than veteran tight end Dawson Knox for the first several weeks of the season. As pointed out above, Kincaid averaged 5.7 receptions in the last 10 weeks he played in of the season. A full season of this production would be over 95 receptions. This could be my favorite futures prop I have dug up so far in these articles.

2. NFL Fantasy Rounds 1-5 Tight Ends: Trey McBride
I’ll admit it, I’m not too high on Kelce, Mark Andrews or Try McBride this season, who fill out the remaining tight ends in the first 5 rounds. Partially because I just think there is too much value in the wide receiver and running back positions in rounds 3-5. But on the flip side, I’m not all that impressed with the receivers available in round two. Many have question marks. So in drafts where I land a running back in round 1, I may be willing to reach on last season’s top tight end, Sam LaPorta.
LaPorta exploded on the scene last year. He was tied for the top TE in most leagues with 829 receiving yards and 7 touch downs, as a rookie. These numbers were extremely impressive, especially on a team like the Detroit Lions who have plenty of mouths to feed. And while some may point towards him regressing if players like Gibbs or Jameson Williams take on larger roles, I still have more confidence in him being a lock for a top three spot in his position.
Unlike Kelce, LaPorta has no age concerns. Unlike Andrews LaPorta has not shown any health issues. And unlike McBride, the Lions offense is well established as a top producing unit in the league. To me LaPorta has the least amount of questions for NFL fantasy this season when drafting a tight end in the top 5 rounds. So if I’m going to reach for one, it may as well be the youngest TE who is in one of the best situations.
Sam LaPorta u7.5 receiving touchdowns for -130 on BetOnline:
I know an under bet doesn’t exactly correlate with my argument to draft LaPorta. But that doesn’t mean that LaPorta still wont be a top player in his position. He still has Gibbs, Montgomery, Amon Ra St. Brown and Williams to compete with. And there is a world where the Lions offense regresses slightly. But LaPorta matching or exceeding his 81 receptions and over 825 receiving yards will still amount to tons of fantasy value. So taking his under here gives some injury insurance on a future bet that may be difficult for LaPorta to replicate.
