See Picks & Statistics For The GameThe New York Giants could not have asked for a better start to the new NFL season, as they went into Nashville and downed Derrick Henry and the Tennessee. But can they keep the good vibes going and take care of business against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday?
In their first regular season game under new head coach Brian Daboll, the Giants overcame a 13-0 halftime deficit, took, a late lead on a touchdown and two-point conversion, and left Nashville with an upset win thanks to the Titans missing a potential game-winning field goal with no time remaining.
The Panthers also overcame a 13-point second-half deficit to take a late lead in their opener at Cleveland. They trailed 14-0 in the first half and 20-7 after three quarters but rallied to take a 24-23 lead with a little over a minute left.
But they didn’t get the same good fortune in the final seconds that the Giants did, as Cade York nailed a 58-yard field goal in the waning moments to give the Browns a 26-24 win and deny Baker Mayfield a win in his return to Cleveland.
With little separating the two teams, at least at this point, another tight game with a heart-stopping finish could be in the cards in their matchup at MetLife Stadium. But who will come out on top? There’s a good argument for backing either team here.

It’s still early, and the Giants still have a long way to go. But there are a number of things that helped them win in Nashville that make them the team to back in this matchup.
Will Barkley have another big day after terrorizing Titans?
Joe Judge’s two seasons were not at all pleasant for Saquon Barkley, who played in only two games in 2020 and averaged only 3.7 yards per carry and 6.4 yards per catch in 13 games last season.
But he ran for 164 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries against the Titans, double what Derrick Henry managed in 21 carries. And while he only tallied 30 yards receiving on six catches, his number of touches serves as a strong indication that Daboll wants the ball in his hands frequently.
That could spell major trouble for the Panthers after they allow 217 rushing yards against the Browns, including 141 on 22 carries by Nick Chubb.
Under-fire Jones comes up big for Big Blue
As for quarterback Daniel Jones, there were certainly some not so good moments, which he needs less of going forward. In the second quarter, he turned the ball over on a sack when the Giants were down 10-0. Then in the fourth quarter, he threw what could have been a costly interception with the Giants inside the 10 and down 20-13.
But he otherwise largely did what he needed to do, completing 17 of 21 passes for 188 yards with two touchdowns. Standout performances would certainly help him make an impression, but he doesn’t need to be spectacular at this point of the season.
What he does need to do is manage the game well and make plays when he needs to, and he did just that against the Titans.
On the final drive, Jones made three huge plays, converting a fourth down inside the red zone with his legs, throwing a touchdown pass to Chris Myarick, and then hooking up with Barkley for the game-winning two-point conversion.
Will Carolina’s M&M duo keep it close?
Defensively, the Giants didn’t make life too difficult for Ryan Tannehill, sacking him only once and allowing him to have a fairly efficient day (20 for 32, 266 yards, 2 TD).
So, that should generate some confidence for Mayfield, who didn’t start out well in his return to Cleveland but led the Panthers to 17 points in their final three drives.
If Christian McCaffrey, who had only 57 yards on 14 touches in Week 1, can be more impactful this week, Carolina will have every chance to emerge victorious.
But the Giants made some very encouraging strides on both sides of the ball in Nashville, and I like them to build off of that and pull out another close win in their home opener.
