After five long months, NFL fans finally know that it’ll be the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers colliding in Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII next month. It’s going to be a massive showdown between two teams that just met on football’s biggest stage five years ago, leaving time to tell if this result is different.

The potential of hosting the Lombardi Trophy means different things to each franchise. The Chiefs need to win to further establish themselves as a modern-day dynasty while the 49ers aim to win their first title in three decades. Having said that, those are just brief examples of storylines heading into this year’s festivities.
Let’s explore three of the early storylines that every football enthusiast is talking about heading into Super Bowl 58.

3 Early Super Bowl 58 Storylines: What’s Everyone Talking About?
1. Will Brock Purdy Soldify Himself Among the NFL’s Best QBs?
When it comes to Super Bowl LVIII, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been there and done that. Despite only being drafted in 2017, February’s showdown marks Mahomes’ fourth Super Bowl appearance and an opportunity to win a third ring at the age of 28.
On the other side of the field, Allegiant Stadium will pose as unfamiliar territory for 49ers QB Brock Purdy, who was the final pick at the 2022 NFL Draft.
Having said that, the former Iowa State signal-caller sure looks like he belongs under the NFL’s brightest lights.
49ers QB Brock Purdy sure doesn’t look like a second-year player with how he’s been playing.
Purdy was a key reason why the 49ers went 12-5 during the regular season, completing 69.4% of passes for 4,280 yards 31 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. He also led the NFL in multiple categories, including passer rating (113.0), QB rating (72.8), yards per completion (13.9), and net yards per attempt (8.74).
Although he hasn’t been as impressive during the regular season, Purdy is still averaging 259.5 passing yards through two playoff matchups and it can be argued that the 49ers wouldn’t have come back against the Detroit Lions if it wasn’t for his composure and football IQ.
Beating the Chiefs at Super Bowl LVIII would go a long way for Purdy to establish himself as a credible threat. As mentioned before, Kansas City has become a mainstay at the Super Bowl in recent years, meaning that defeating the Chiefs would paint the 24-year-old as someone who disrupted the league’s first dynasty since the New England Patriots. Outplaying Mahomes would only be the cherry on top.
If Purdy can lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl title less than two years after being named ‘Mr. Irrevelant,’ I won’t be surprised if studios make movies about him in the future.

2. Is This Andy Reid’s Last Super Bowl/NFL Game?
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has done just about all there is to do across his storied career. The 66-year-old bench boss ranks near the top when it comes to most NFL head coaching records, including regular season wins (258, 4th), games over .500 (114, 4th), and playoff victories (25, 2nd).
That’s without mentioning the two Super Bowl rings that he’s won with the Chiefs.
In other words, it wouldn’t be surprising if Reid called it a career after Feb. 11, especially if the Chiefs go out on top. Although Reid has danced around the rumors in the past, Pro Football Talk‘s Mike Florio recently reported that Kansas City is at least thinking about the possibility of the head coach retiring.
“I think Bill Belichick will be the next head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs next year,” per Craig Carton of @FOXSports

— NFL Rumors (@nflrums) January 26, 2024
Reid still has two years left on his contract and could very well decide he wants to keep coaching. However, that may also not be the best idea.
After all, the Chiefs could fall off after this year and Reid could wind up going through what Bill Belichick did over his last few seasons with the New England Patriots. Maybe not quite at that level but all coaches have an expiry date, after all.
Besides, retiring with another Chiefs Super Bowl win could be the best way for Reid to end his career. If he can win a third ring, he’d be just the fifth head coach to do so after Belichick (6), Chuck Noll (4), Bill Walsh (3), and Joe Gibbs (3). Joining a historical group like that would be hard for Reid to top going forward.
At the end of the day, Reid could be feeling one way ahead of the Super Bowl and the outcome of the game could wind up changing it. But regardless of what decision he makes, expect this to be a prevalent storyline for the next few weeks.

3. Will Taylor Swift’s Presence Be Felt in Las Vegas?
It’s been near-impossible to talk about the Chiefs this season without mentioning global icon Taylor Swift, who’s dating Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce. Whether it’s due to her appearances during national broadcasts or how she’s impacted her man’s performance, Swift’s name is in NFL headlines at least once every day.
With the Chiefs now reaching Super Bowl LVIII, Kelce-Swift supporters and haters alike are wondering how the award-winning musician’s presence will be felt in Las Vegas next month.

Swift resumes “The Eras Tour” in February and even has a show in Tokyo, Japan on the day before Super Bowl LVIII. Having said that, it isn’t impossible for her to attend Allegiant Stadium. Her concert is projected to end at 6 a.m. PT on Sunday morning, meaning there’s still plenty of time for her to get to Las Vegas in time for the Super Bowl.
If Swift does wind up making the game, everyone is going to wonder if it’ll be the night when Kelce proposes. The couple continues to get more serious with each passing month and it’s hard to imagine a bigger stage for a proposal than Super Bowl 58 (assuming the Chiefs win, of course). Could you imagine all the publicity that’d get for the NFL?
Whether she does or doesn’t appear at Allegiant Stadium in two weeks, expect the Swift-Kelce relationship to be a massive point of discussion leading up to and at Super Bowl LVIII.
